POSITION SUMMARY:Provides technical knowledge in preparing instruments, equipment and supplies for procedures and/or assists team with the technical portion of the procedure.SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:None.MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:Standard and specialized equipment and supplies per procedure/unit needs.TYPICAL DUTIES:

Selects required equipment and supplies for procedures based on provider’s preferences adapted for specific procedures and individual patients. Prepares room for procedures.

Assembles, tests and assures correct working order of all supplies and equipment prior to and during procedures.

Provides technical assistance to provider with technical requirements of procedure, collection of specimen using anatomical landmarks and knowledge of disease process. Management of specimen labeling and processing.

Applies principles of aseptic technique theories to equipment preparation and maintenance and when assisting with procedures. Identifies any potential compromise to sterile/High Level Disinfectant integrity of items throughout the procedure.

Disassembles, identifies defective or malfunctioning parts, and provides preventive maintenance for all procedures supplies and equipment. Performs all pre-cleaning requirements per regulatory standards of all endoscopes including inspection, leak testing, cleaning, high level disinfecting and identifying needed repairs. Follows established protocols for reprocessing endoscopes and accessories and for storing equipment.

Based on material and/or manufacturer's instruction, determines methods of High-Level Disinfection mode for products. Checks and calibrates equipment according to equipment protocol

Works with physicians and nurses in the selection of new inventory. Maintains professional relationships and communicates with vendors and internal purchasing department. Updates protocols and equipment/supply preference list of physicians.

Ability to performs ambulatory technician duties as assigned, such as, but not limited to obtaining and documenting vital signs.

Assist office staff with scheduling procedures and appointments

QUALIFICATIONS:Associates degree or equivalent plus two years of related medical or customer service experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred. This generally involves orientation to the department’s infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures and routines. During this period the technician must demonstrate an ability to progress toward proficient and competent performance of required tasks of a procedure tech. Success within this band requires independent responsibility for performing general procedures as defined by the department, specimen handling and high level disinfection (HLD) in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated paper/log and computer work while providing high quality care within a team environment.Ba nd Two (II): Competent Procedure Technicians – With minimal supervision, demonstrates proficiency and competence in all aspects of job responsibilities and expectations, and consistently demonstrates initiative to assist in other areas of the department when the need arises. Demonstrates consistent attention to detail when performing procedural tasks. Completes all associated paper and computer work for imaging and specimen management. A Band two technician also serves as a preceptor in the on-boarding of newly hired technicians directly orienting to equipment, computer programs, HLD, as well as departmental and hospital policies. They are considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and act as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Directly assists in the mentoring of newer technicians by providing one-to-one assistance in conjunction with the RN HLD Champion. Anticipates supply and equipment needs in relation to daily procedures and operations. Able to effectively troubleshoot issues that arise within the department and deal with accordingly. Represents the department on various committees such as safety, quality, and operations groups. Takes responsibility to prepare the department and staff for NYS and TJC evaluations and participates in the collection of data related to performance audits. Follows and maintains all IFUs, introducing changes to staff as needed. Coordination of new equipment education presentations by suppliers and/or vendors.Band Two status requires minimum of 6 months of progressively responsible professional work experience in a procedure setting.Band Three (III): Expert Procedure Technicians – In addition to the responsibilities of a procedure technician band two, a band three technician is competent in assisting with the most advanced procedures the department offers. This includes additional orientation time and competency. They are responsible for establishing and maintaining the new technology machines and equipment that are brought into the department per physician request. They work closely with the company reps to establish training and work closely with unit leadership to determine new competency checklists with each new procedure.Band Three status requires a minimum of 1 year of progressively responsible professional work experience as a procedure technician.Eligibility for advancement consideration requires the technician to be in good performance standing and demonstrate the ability to perform position duties. Readiness for movement in the bands is assessed by the manager, upon successful demonstration of knowledge and task proficiency as defined in the career ladder. Movement to a higher band is based on departmental need and requires final approval from the Ambulatory Nursing Director in collaboration with Human Resources.
