The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management (SIM) is responsible for maintaining 12,750 miles of sidewalk and more than 185,000 corners throughout the city. The Pedestrian Ramp Program (PRP), a unit within SIM, is committed to providing pedestrian (curb) ramps citywide that meet applicable accessibility laws and guidelines. Pedestrian ramps are a critical component in providing safe and accessible means of travel throughout New York City. Pedestrian ramps provide access on and off our streets and sidewalk and are an essential tool for all pedestrians, especially aging New Yorkers and persons with disabilities.PRP has an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer to join a fast-paced, collaborative, innovative team and to lead an exceptional team of skilled engineers and project managers to deliver an ambitious ped ramp accessibility program. The selected candidate will lead the Engineering team, who is responsible for working with other internal and external stakeholders and other city agencies, including the Department of Design and Construction (who manages the design and construction management on behalf of DOT) to reduce and mitigate project associated risks that would present a roadblock in the expedited completion of pedestrian ramps reconstruction projects (including the adequate coordination during scoping, design, and construction and monitor and mitigate design and cost changes with the Planning Team and DDC), ensuring the adequate tracking of project progress from design through construction completion, providing feedback and general engineering technical input during the planning and design process of any pedestrian accessibility related work, and providing any materials or feedback necessary for meetings with elected officials, city council hearings, Commissioner’s correspondence, press events or inquiries, and court monitor’s reporting.The Chief Engineer will lead a Director and engineering staff who oversee pedestrian ramp projects, to develop metrics to measure the success of the program, to assist in the monitoring of accessibility as it pertain to other entities doing work within the right-of-way, the development of a technical team that can perform feasibility analysis (grading and ADA compliancy), the development of accessible ped ramps alternatives solutions, the determination of technical infeasibilities, identifying accessibility best practices, the development of engineer’s estimates and preparing training materials and hosting accessibility workshops. The Executive Director will also be responsible for reviewing and approving the technical infeasibilities submitted by the developers and homeowners. The selected candidate will have wide latitude for independent judgment, initiative and action in identifying, planning, coordinating, and overseeing the development and progress of ped ramp program contracts throughout all boroughs of New York City and will introduce and apply the most innovative methods to ensure that this high priority program is delivered expeditiously. The candidate will perform other related duties as assigned by the Associate Deputy Commissioner and the Executive Director.Qualifications(1) Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; and (2) A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License. Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment. A masters degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the civil engineering experience required in “1" above.
