The Bergelson lab at NYU’s Department of Biology is looking for a highly motivated andindependent individual to work as a Junior Laboratory Associate.This position is for a trainee preparing for a research path. It will provide development oftechnical skills; supervision by senior scientists incorporating individual development plan insupport of training goals and those of faculty mentor; and possible publication of researchfindings during appointment period.The trainee will work toward advancing the research goals of a collaborative effort tounderstand how pathogenic communities establish in plants. Central to this effort areexperiments to characterize the outcomes and genetic basis of interactions of plant pathogenswith other co-infecting pathogens, commensal bacteria, and their host plants. Generalresponsibilities may include the optimization and implementation of high-throughputapproaches to set up experimental infections and quantify their outcomes, as well as follow-upwork to understand underlying mechanisms; organizational tasks necessary to carry out theseefforts, such as ordering supplies and conducting or arranging equipment maintenance; andorganization and dissemination of methods documentation, data, and results. The trainee willbe expected to gain new expertise and fill gaps in their knowledge through a combination ofdirect training and mentorship by senior lab members, actively seeking collaborative inputwithin the lab as necessary, and self-guided study of publicly available resources, includingpublished protocols and scientific literature.Specific responsibilities may include culturing bacteria and plants, operating robotic pipettors,extracting DNA, generating DNA sequences, PCR, transforming microbes, preparing stocks andreagents, coordinating the preservation and exchange of material and data among aninternational team of collaborators, ordering supplies and equipment, and basic laboratorymaintenance and organization.Projects in the Bergelson lab explore how plants interact with pathogenic bacteria both directlythrough immune responses and indirectly through its microbiome.
