Job Title: Cemetery Crew Member

West Point National Cemetery, New York

Position Type: Full-time

Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Cemetery Worker to join our team. As a Cemetery Worker, you will play a vital role in maintaining the grounds of our cemetery with dignity and respect. This position involves various tasks related to burial services, landscaping, and general maintenance, ensuring the cemetery remains a tranquil and well-kept final resting place for loved ones.

Responsibilities:

1. Grave Digging: Perform manual labor to dig graves according to specifications, ensuring proper depth and dimensions while adhering to safety standards and regulations.

2. Burial Services Assistance: Assist funeral directors and families during burial services by setting up tents, chairs, and other equipment, and coordinating the lowering of caskets or urns into the grave.

3. Grounds Maintenance: Maintain the appearance of the cemetery grounds by mowing lawns, trimming hedges, planting flowers, and removing weeds, debris, and litter.

4. Grave Markers and Monuments: Install grave markers, headstones, and monuments according to cemetery regulations, ensuring proper alignment and stability.

5. Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, Z-turn mowers, and small hand tools safely and effectively.

6. Assisting with Heavy Objects: Assist in lifting heavy objects, including 200 lb headstones, using proper techniques and equipment.

7. Customer Service: Provide compassionate and respectful assistance to visitors, answering questions, providing directions, and offering support as needed.

8. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of burials, and other relevant information using computer software or manual systems.

9. Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the safe handling of equipment, chemicals, and hazardous materials.

Qualifications:

- High school diploma or equivalent.

- Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or related field preferred.

- Proficiency in operating excavating machinery and Z-turn mowers.

- Ability to assist in lifting heavy objects, including 200 lb headstones, with proper techniques and equipment.

- Ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.

- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Compassionate demeanor and ability to provide support to grieving families.

- Basic computer skills for record keeping and communication purposes.

- Valid driver's license and clean driving record may be required.

Additional Qualifications:

- Experience working in a Military National Cemetery or similar environment dedicated to honoring fallen veterans is highly desirable.

- Understanding of and respect for military customs, traditions, and protocols.

- Sensitivity to the unique needs and emotions of families of fallen veterans.

- Commitment to upholding the highest standards of dignity and reverence in all aspects of cemetery operations.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).

- Stamina to perform physical tasks for extended periods.

- Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions.
