Location: Farmingdale, NY Category: The Research Foundation Posted On: Thu Aug 1 2024 Job Description: The Research Foundation at Farmingdale State College (FSC) seeks a full-time Counselor for the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) to work with historically underrepresented students pursuing STEM majors.STEP is a New York State Education Program that provides academic support services and enrichment activities to students in grade 7-12 who show interest and aptitude in STEM or licensed professions across eight Long Island school districts. STEP students acquire the skills necessary for successful entry into college and science, engineering, technology, health-related fields and licensed professions. STEP offers academic programs, enrichment activities and support services aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies necessary for students in grades 7-12 for entry into college-level programs in science, engineering, technology, health sciences and licensed professions.The STEP part time Counselor will report to the Director of the STEP program and work up to 20 hours per week. The STEP counselor will be responsible for assisting with provision of student support services that are effective and in accordance with the grant and College policy. Primary responsibilities include:

Participate in program promotional events and work to recruit and retain students.

Assist with visitations to partner schools, and supervise and track student participation, including some weekends (Saturday classes and workshops; promotional events) and after school.

Assist with the coordination and chaperoning of student field trips, workshops, enrichment activities, events etc.

Conduct workshops and meetings to facilitate student college and career readiness and student success.

Communicate with students, parents, and other stakeholders regularly regarding program information, activities, and events, and update student contact information as needed.

Evaluate student outcomes and assist with identifying students' needs and interventions

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in social services, education, counseling, or related field.

At least two years' experience working in student support services with historically disadvantaged and/or underrepresented secondary school students

Experience with provision of student support services, such as counseling, presenting workshops, and coordinating trips or special events

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience working with a diverse student population

Ability to work on Saturday mornings during scheduled programs each semester

Valid drivers license, eligible to drive in New York

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Proficiency in computer systems, including Microsoft Office

Creative, organized, and motivated individual interested in student development

Adaptable and able to work with various constituents, including secondary school personnel, college faculty, community stakeholders etc.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time Research Foundation position.
