Overview
The part-time sexton, supervised by the rector and wardens, works with staff to maintain church cleanliness, set up rooms, ensure safety, and upkeep buildings and grounds on a weekly basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Building Security, Maintenance and Cleaning
Open and close building on Sunday mornings and on weekdays as scheduled by the rector or wardens.
Clean and inspect the sanctuary and chapel weekly, unless directed otherwise by the rector or wardens. Tasks include sweeping and mopping floors, posting hymn sheets, and aligning kneelers.
Inspect and maintain facilities, including cleaning restrooms; dry mopping areas such as the narthex, nave, ambulatory, and coat room; wet mopping and spray buffing when required; dusting surfaces; washing windows; completing minor repairs; changing light bulbs; addressing pest control; painting as needed; and performing carpet and floor cleaning along with related duties.
Regularly empty trash and recycling bins.
Ensure restrooms and kitchen areas are adequately stocked with paper products and essential supplies.
Request and order supplies as needed.
Complete minor repairs and report maintenance needs to the parish administrator, rector or wardens.
Report any unsafe conditions or facilities requiring repair to the rector and/or wardens.
Groundskeeping
Maintain clean walkways and entrances by removing debris, litter, leaves, and dirt.
Ensure all church entrances are clear, assist with snow and ice removal as needed, especially on Sundays.
Inspect and remove litter from church parking lots and grounds.
Maintain plantings and garden areas, including trimming and weed control.
Worship Service Assistance
Open and ready building prior to first Sunday worship service.
Support clergy with morning needs.
Assist with hospitality hour preparation, including making coffee.
Clean up after hospitality time and wash dishes in the dishwasher if needed.
Assist with the set-up, removal, and storage of seasonal decorations.
Special Event Set-up/Break-down
Assist with preparation for, set-up, dismantling and clean-up after special parish events, including holiday worship services, weddings and funerals, etc.
Set up and break down events at the Rector's or Junior Warden's request, including storing tables, chairs, and supplies.
Support groups renting facility rooms, including set-up, dismantling, clean-up and supervising rental event.
Working Schedule
Fifteen (15) hours per week to include approximately five Sunday morning hours (7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.), and ten hours Monday through Friday to be scheduled at the approval of the rector or wardens.
Additional paid hours associated with facility rentals.
Physical Requirements
Lift, carry, or push up to fifty (50) pounds.
Climb (step ladders), crawl, stoop, and kneel.
Work in various weather conditions, including heat and cold.
Personal Qualities Needed
Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills, a service-oriented approach, and be comfortable working alongside a variety of individuals, including parish volunteers.
While St. Paul’s is a religious organization, an employee’s religious affiliation is not a consideration; however, awareness of and respect for the organization’s identity and mission are essential for effectiveness in this role.
Dependability, clear communication skills, and honesty are required.
The candidate must have access to reliable transportation.
