Autobody Technician Job Duties

Overall Responsibilities:

Repair and restore damaged vehicle bodies to pre-accident condition or better, ensuring structural integrity and cosmetic perfection.

Work efficiently and safely to meet deadlines and customer expectations.

Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Adhere to all safety regulations and shop policies.

Specific Duties:

Inspection and Assessment:

o Thoroughly inspect vehicles to identify all damage, including dents, scratches, rust, frame misalignment, and other issues.

o Discuss repair needs and options with customers, providing clear explanations and cost estimates.

o Obtain customer authorization before proceeding with repairs.

Repair:

o Remove and replace damaged body panels, fenders, bumpers, trim, and other components.

o Straighten, hammer out, or weld dents and other deformations.

o Repair or replace windshields and other glass components.

o Perform frame straightening and realignment when necessary.

o Apply body fillers and sealants to prepare surfaces for painting.

Painting:

o Sand and prepare surfaces for paint application.

o Mix and apply paint according to manufacturer specifications.

o Ensure a smooth, even finish with proper color matching.

o Perform final buffing and polishing.

Other Duties:

o Maintain and service shop equipment and tools.

o Order parts and supplies as needed.

o Document repairs and maintain accurate records.

o Assist other technicians as needed.

o Stay up-to-date on new technologies and repair techniques.

Additional Skills and Requirements:

Strong mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.

Good problem-solving skills.

Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Good work ethic and attention to detail.

High school diploma or equivalent; auto body technician certification a plus.

Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
