All DOC positions are designated as Safety Sensitive Positions and are subject to random drug testing pursuant to the Secretarial Directive governing Personnel Drug Testing. Medical marijuana usage, as defined in Amendment 93 of the Arkansas Constitution, prohibits Personnel in a Safety-Sensitive Position from the use of medical marijuana even if they are qualifying patient under the amendment and/or hold a registry identification card. Position InformationClass Code: T048CGrade: GS10FLSA Status: EXEMPTSalary Range: $56,039 - $89,383SummaryThe Arkansas Department of Correction/Department of Community Correction (ADC/DCC) Captain is responsible for supervising and coordinating security operations of a correctional unit or residential facility in an assigned area. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.FunctionsSupervises a large protective service staff by interviewing applicants, recommending hire/fire, assigning and reviewing work, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Supervises and directs searches for contraband; counts, oversees meals, and supervises inmates/residents in housing, work, and other areas. Updates security changes, ensures accurate coverage for assigned shift, and performs routine safety checks of doors, windows, and alarm systems. Maintains records on inmates/residents work and barrack assignments, receives counts throughout shift, and takes action if count does not clear. Participates in searches for escaped inmates/residents, provides security to authorized groups visiting the unit, and authorizes issuance of weapons, ammunition, and vehicles. Reviews incident reports submitted by subordinate staff and prepares and maintains final reports. Reads, reviews, and applies information contained in inmate/resident records related to the offender's health/safety and to the security of the facility and provides appropriate information to staff Investigates incidents by interviewing officers and inmates/residents to obtain information, counsels inmates/residents with problems, may hold minor disciplinary hearings, and recommends action to be taken involving incidents. Reviews information concerning inmate/resident behavior and attitude to recommend inmate/resident classification changes. Attends various meetings, including conducting briefing with the next work shift. Maintains various reports and logs concerning security activities for assigned shift. Provides security for authorized groups visiting the center. Reviews current policy and procedure to assure compliance and educates staff regarding the same. May use force, including chemical agents and firearms to control inmates/residents.
