The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.This position exists to independently and collaboratively conceive, plan, direct and conduct statewide surveys, monitoring, and research on native terrestrial insects, as well as perform data synthesis, analysis and interpretation so that relevant information on the distribution and conservation status of Minnesota’s native terrestrial insects is made available for technical guidance and scientific education and fully integrated into comprehensive statewide efforts and priorities of the Minnesota Biological Survey and State Wildlife Action Plan.Responsibilities include:

Development of a terrestrial insect work plan that advances the priorities of the Minnesota Biological Survey (MBS) Strategic Plan and Minnesota State Wildlife Action Plan.

Provide scientific expertise on terrestrial insect ecology, in particular, endangered and threatened species.

Coordinate MBS surveys of terrestrial insect species and communities; conduct field-based research in area of expertise.

Oversee final preparation of data and specimens, analysis and interpretation of findings, and communication of results.

This position includes field work and statewide travel. This position may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete an annual telework agreement.Minimum Qualifications

Advanced degree in zoology, biology, or related degree with a focus on entomology.

Three years of professional experience with an M.S. degree or one year of professional experience with a Ph.D. conducting field-based insect survey, monitoring, or research projects.

Professional experience with insect specimen preparation and work with museum collections.

Professional work experience with insect community ecology, taxonomy, or conservation.

Knowledge of native plant species and communities, and landscape ecology.

Project management skills sufficient to effectively plan, budget, track, coordinate, oversee contracts and grants, and direct resources available to meet program and project needs.

Experience with standard word processing (e.g. Word), data management (e.g. Excel), Geographic Information Systems (e.g. ArcMap), and statistical (e.g. R) software.

Experience working as part of a team that achieves goals and resolves conflicts while maintaining productive and positive working relationships with diverse colleagues and partners.

Experience communicating scientific and technical concepts, orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

Four years of professional experience with an M.S. degree or 2 years of professional experience with a Ph.D. conducting field-based survey, monitoring or research projects.

Two or more peer-reviewed publications based on original research in terrestrial insect ecology.

Professional experience with native plant species and native plant communities in Minnesota.

Experience working with terrestrial plant/insect associations.
