OverviewThe Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy. The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is advancing research to support the integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) into modern power systems. The Optimization and Control Group within the EIBD is looking for a PhD Intern to contribute to innovative research on stability analysis and control of hybrid IBR systems. The position will focus on analytical stability analysis of grid-forming (GFM) wind systems in hybrid configurations with grid-following (GFL) inverters. The goal is to enhance system stability and improve overall grid performance.ResponsibilitiesThe Intern will work with PNNL staff to conduct advanced stability analyses of hybrid power systems integrating GFM and GFL inverters. This includes developing analytical models and applying techniques to evaluate system stability and enhance system strength. With guidance from PNNL staff, the Intern will investigate GFM control for wind farm to improve grid stability. This involves performing simulations using tools like PSS®E to validate analytical results and controls performance. The candidate is also expected to engage in dissemination of results through active participation in preparing technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
