SCALE OPERATOR

Reports to: Director of Customer Relations
Terms: Regular full-time, hourly
Compensation: $20-23/hour, depending on experience

Primary Purpose
The Scale Operator’s core responsibility is to operate the scale, fill out all necessary paperwork for inbound and outbound loads, and enter data into the scale system or other databases. This position requires basic computer skills and an ability to work in a fast-paced setting that involves consistent multitasking. The Scale Operator plays a critical role within the organization, supporting accurate data collection and clear communication between departments, external customers, and business partners.
Eureka’s scale office is currently open from 6am-5pm Mon-Fri, plus occasional Saturdays when recycling routes are delayed due to a holiday or severe weather. The Scale Operator will typically work the opening shift of 6am-2pm, but will also sometimes be scheduled to work a later shift during regular business hours or an occasional shift on a Saturday, depending on business needs.
Requirements
Responsibilities
Operate a drive–over scale
Operate a two-way radio to communicate with personnel
Monitor on-site traffic flow and direct trucks to the appropriate tip area
Record data and provide appropriate reports and paperwork for the daily activity of materials shipped and received, including an accurate inventory of incoming and outgoing materials
Provide excellent customer service and written communication to our municipal partners, other haulers, truck drivers, and other business partners
Communicate effectively and courteously with drivers and other employees as well as with the public
Reconcile all reports of materials received and shipped and verify accuracy daily
Review the previous day’s scale entries for outgoing loads to identify, report, and correct errors
Maintain a clean and organized workspace
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately and quickly
Punctual and dependable, willing to work flexible hours
Legible handwriting
Basic computer skills
Ability to learn specific software
Ability to enter information into a database with precision
Effective written and verbal communication skills in English
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing and performing multiple tasks with attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
Three years of scale operator experience, ideally from the waste or recycling industry
Experience with the operation of a two-way radio
Ability to build and edit spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel
Ability to write concise, professional emails to customers and business partners
Spanish language skills or interest in learning conversational Spanish
Working Conditions
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Occasional Saturday work will be required.
