The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.What the work is:To enforce the state mandated quality standards described in Minnesota Statute Chapter 239, and Minnesota Code of Agency Rules 7601 as they apply to volumetric and linear measuring equipment, light capacity scales, prepackaged consumer goods, agriculture and industrial equipment, and petroleum products. Daily duties will consist of carrying out inspections and performance-based testing on low volume meters at gas stations and other fueling points, scale inspections at grocery stores and other commercial businesses, and package inspections primarily at groceries stores, typically in the presence of meter owners/operators. These inspections and performance-based tests can be physically demanding and may include repeated bending, lifting, and carrying of 50 lb. loads and will be conducted outdoors, in all weather conditions, year-round, with some opportunities for work indoors.Training:This trainee position will last for 3-6-months with a salary of $23.01/hr . Training will be in the Weights and Measures office in Burnsville but will quickly transition to field training with experienced investigators throughout the state. Our experienced inspectors will help teach you what you need to know to be an effective and successful inspector. Weekly travel will be required during most of the 3–6 month training period, but you will be home on weekends. Successful passing training will involve passing both written and field exams on NIST handbook 44 and state weights & measures law, as well as demonstrating the ability to perform field evaluations safely and correctly.Upon successful completion of the training program, the employee will be appointed to the position of Weights and Measures Investigator 1 – Light Duty and compensated within the salary range (listed above). There will be a six-month probationary period.Where you work:The position's work area includes the Northwest Metro area. Once out of training, you will commute from your home to and from your assigned workstation. Your workstation will be assigned based on its proximity to the bulk of your assigned work. You will pick up your work vehicle at the beginning of the workday and leave your workstation to conduct your inspections. You will park your work vehicle back at the workstation at the end of the workday if you are not in overnight travel status. The work vehicle will be your mobile office and will be used to transport your testing equipment.Travel:This position will require weekly travel during training, and approximately 2-3 weeks of travel throughout the year after completion of training. Weekly travel means you will leave your workstation on Monday morning and return on Thursday afternoon. You would find a hotel in the area of the state you are working for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. You will be reimbursed for hotel and meals.Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Valid Class D driver's license with clean driving record (as denoted on your resume)
Math skills sufficient to understand and solve basic volumetric equations and correctly apply measurement methods (verified with a test during the interview process)
Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications
College or technical coursework in Mathematics or Science
Experience in calibrating or repairing commercial meters or scales (Retail Motor Fuel Dispensers, Vehicle Tank Meters, Mass Flow Meters, High Volume Meters, Retail Computing Scales, Medium Capacity Scales, etc.)
Experience in determining compliance with statutes and rules by way of inspection
Experience in quality control management
Knowledge of NIST Handbook 44, MN Statute 239, Department of Commerce Rules 7601 and 7602 as they relate to weighing and measuring equipment
Experience in working a route (delivery, sales, etc.)
Physical RequirementsJob involves frequently lifting of 5 through 50 lbs. of test weights, and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools, heavy hoses, and file boxes. This work is done year-round in all weather conditions.
