- The contractor shall act as the primary telemetry support Point of Contact (POC) resource and provide laboratory support by assisting in the performance of aerosol exposures/animal research protocols as prioritized by Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) Leadership.
- The contractor shall assist in the execution of scientific studies, analyze data, and maintain laboratory space and equipment.
- Maintain workload volume (approximately 20 research studies and protocols per year).
- Independently assemble, calibrate, and test telemetry systems.
- Troubleshoot electronic and software communication issues.
- Independently perform telemetry support for animal studies in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 Biocontainment Laboratory environments.
- Operate and maintain the telemetry systems (e.g., DSI ((Data Sciences International)), Stellar, & NOTOCORD) in a validated state for use in Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) animal studies (approximately 15-25 validated systems per year).
- Maintain a safe and secure storage/backup of all original data files.
- Maintain inventory of all telemetry system components including hardware and software.
- Tabulate and analyze telemetry data.
- Provide results to Telemetry Support Subject Matter Experts (SME) for review.
- Assist in the training of study personnel on basic telemetry functions and data review.
- Assist in the coordination and collaboration with scientists/technical staff within the institute to provide telemetry services.
- Assist in building 1412 Suite Supervisor by ensuring weekly/monthly equipment and safety requirements are completed/documented.
- Assist in generating, characterizing, and sampling biological aerosols to support pathogenesis and medical countermeasure (MCMs) studies against biothreat agents (workload is approximately 50-100 aerosol exposures per year).
- Assist in animal plethysmography and aerosol supervision (assaying and decontaminations).
- Investigate events during the phases of infection in representative laboratory animals prior to and following agent exposure independently and in collaboration with others.
- Support all technical aspects of animal protocols (including but not limited to) performing animal observations, physicals, sample collection, sample processing, and euthanasia as required.
- Perform assays to include viral and bacterial stock characterization, plating assays, ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction), microarray, cytokine analysis, and applicable in vitro sample analysis assays as required by approved in vivo and in vitro protocols.
- Perform clinical pathology evaluations such as: Hematology, Clinical Chemistry analysis, and Coagulation (in support of approved animal protocols and Nonhuman Primate ((NHP)) colony management operations).
- Maintain laboratory space/equipment; record and document controls of all equipment maintenance.
- Assist with Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) writing, revision, and review.
- Complete annual/maintain records IAW ("in accordance with") all applicable regulations and SOPs.
- Assist in the generation of SOP risk assessments.
- Respond to regulatory audits and Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPAs) within the required timelines (workload is typically 15 SOPs and 5-10 CAPAs per year).
- Coordinate/collaborate with AAT leadership and personnel to assist in the development and continuation of the AAT technical training program (receive necessary training; once qualified by AAT leadership, contractor will assist in the training of other technical staff).
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in Molecular Biology, Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years' experience working in a telemetry position or holding relatable responsibilities.
- Telemetry systems and equipment.
- Experience with animal handling, observations, physicals, sample collection, and sample processing.
- Preferred:
- 3-4 years' experience in a Bacteriology laboratories.
- Experience in Biocontainment laboratories.
- Experience in BSL-3 or BSL-4 environments/laboratories
- Clinical diagnostics and regulatory laboratory experience.
- Skilled in preparing cloning plasmids, sequencing reactions, and plasmid preparations.
- Skilled in animal injections.
- Knowledgeable in animal euthanasia procedures.
- Animal gavage and blood collection.
- Media preparation.
- Knowledgeable in aerosol exposure procedures.
- Basic and advanced Molecular Biology assays.
- Clinical assays.
- Skilled in in vivo and in vitro procedures/techniques.
- Isolating and purifying DNA specimens.
- Processing bacterial spore harvests.
- Ability to perform antibody determinations.
- Skilled in measuring cytokines in cell cultures and cell extracts.
- Complete toxin neutralization assays.
- Knowledgable of GLP-FDA 21 CFR Part 11 & Part 58 regulations.
- Record keeping.
- Skilled SOP generation, editing, and revisions.
- Skilled in planning/troubleshooting laboratory equipment and executing laboratory studies in a highly regulated environment.
- Preferred:
- Animal inoculations, tissue collection, and conduct bleeding.
- Basic cell culture, plaque assays, plaque reduction neutralization test, PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), ELISA, and Western Blot.
- Clinical laboratory testing on animal samples.

- Attendance is required at scheduled trainings provided by qualified AAT staff.
- Attendance is required at scheduled trainings provided by qualified Veterinary Medicine Division Staff.
- COVID:
- Cherokee Federal employees are included as covered employees in U.S. Presidential Executive Order 14042, which mandates COVID vaccines for federal contractors.
- Executive Order 14042 is currently blocked from enforcement pending court proceedings. Therefore, Cherokee Federal is halting the application of the mandate; however, if the injunction is lifted, Cherokee Federal will restore administration of the vaccine requirement.
- Work is conducted in a climate-controlled office or laboratory.
- The contractor will be working in a Biocontainment Laboratory and must adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) regulations/policies.
- All laboratory tasking must be conducted under the guidance of a study Principal Investigator (PI) and under the authority of the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) in compliance with GLP standards.
- Applicants selected will be subject to a US Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for participation in the BPRP.and the CSPRP.
