Support Scientist for Atmospheric Composition and Air Quality Modeling

DescriptionSAIC is seeking a candidate to support NCEP/EMC in developing models for atmospheric composition and operational air quality prediction. The candidate will be involved in 1) Developing and coupling the Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) with the NOAA Unified Forecast System (UFS), 2) Testing, evaluating, and enhancing UFS-CMAQ forecasts for air quality and wildfire predictions or, 3) Testing, evaluating, and improving UFS meteorological forecasts crucial for advancing air quality predictions.Responsibilities:The candidate will perform the job duties in an independent, collaborative and initiative way, applying innovative methods for the primary work areas. The candidate will work in a team and collaborate with the community to develop and improve air quality modeling and support transition to operations.QualificationsRequired Education and Experience:

Advanced experience in air quality and/or earth system modeling.

Master’s Degree or higher in atmospheric science, geophysical science, or related physical science in air quality and chemistry. The successful candidate will demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

Advanced skill in modern programming languages, such as FORTRAN90 and Python.

Advanced skill of high performing Computing on various platforms using MPI, OpenMP, Slurm, LSF, etc.

Knowledge of modern software development practices and version control software, in particular Git/GitHub/Gitflow.

Experience working in a UNIX environment with advanced shell scripting languages and familiar with running complex jobs.

Desired:

Experience with one or more of the CMAQ and UFS systems and applications.

Experience in either air quality or meteorological forecast model evaluation and datapost-processing.

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in Air Quality, Chemistry, Atmospheric or the Geophysical Sciences.

Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a team environment and communicate effectively using good oral and written communication skills.
