In 2017, the Vice Provost for Research (VPR) created an Institution-wide Research Development Team (RDT), to help faculty enhance their research competitiveness, catalyze new research and institutional collaboration, and design and implement strategic services for faculty and researchers seeking external funding at Johns Hopkins. We are seeking a Manager of Editing Services who will work with faculty and staff in the design, content and preparation of sponsored project proposals in accordance with sponsor standards and requirements. Participates in writing narrative sections and edits narrative drafts, particularly those that require technical expertise and awareness of education trends and issues.In 2020, the Editorial Assistance Services Initiative (EASI) launched to provide editorial help to faculty of all ranks impacted by COVID-19. At this point, EASI has evolved to being a resource for all faculty who submit proposals through RDT or strategic funding opportunities in partnership with Office of Foundation Relations.Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Manage EASI and supervise two Sr. Science Writers.

Present editing services at faculty and department meetings.

Plan and facilitate faculty writing workshops (i.e., for the Catalyst awardees).

Strategize on growth efforts and implement expanded services for the VPR Editing Team, EASI program, etc.

Communicate information of a highly complex nature in a clear, precise, and compelling way; write technical information in a way that a non-technical person can understand it.

Proof, standardize, and edit proposal sections written by peers and other writers on the proposal team to ensure they reflect the language of the proposal.

Reviews and provides feedback on proposal narratives and documents.

Convey technical information in a clear and accessible manner to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.

In coordination with office staff, creates, updates and maintains templates, boilerplate information and online resources that support proposal development and submission processes.

Provides consultation services on research strategies, tactics, tools and best practices for the development of grants for submission, as requested.

Monitor and analyze developments and major issues in higher education to ensure they are shared with faculty as appropriate.

Develop and sustain contacts with university leadership, faculty, staff, and other constituents.

Develop new ways to improve cycle time and overall effectiveness of proposal generation while maintaining and improving proposal quality.

Participate in kick off meetings for teams planning to respond to Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

Collaborate with Subject Matter Expert (SMEs) technical teams to establish technical specifications and to determine subject material to be created for proposal development.

Work on special projects for the Vice Provost as requested.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated superior writing, editing, and prooing skills.

Strong research skills with willingness and ability to quickly synthesize complex information in accessible and actionable formats.

Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner.

Knowledge of style manuals, such as Chicago, US Government Publishing Office, and Associated Press.

Experience in successful management of multiple concurrent projects to meet deadlines.

Experience in developing, writing and submitting successful grant applications.

Excellent organizational skills, ability to work in a complex fast-paced and high-profile environment with short deadlines, competing priorities and intense pressure to perform.

Experience in working both independently and as part of a team, exercising a high degree of initiative.

Experience in successfully working effectively and cooperatively with an ethnically and culturally diverse population.

Strong problem-solver; ability to navigate various viewpoints to develop consensus.

Ability to be flexible and self-motivated in order to deliver high quality work product in multiple communication mediums.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in a related technical/scientific field. Must possess in-depth subject matter knowledge. Requires a minimum of three years related experience, preferably in a technical/scientific field.

Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Terminal Degree in a technical field.
