Gorham, Maine academic book publisher is seeking freelance book cover designers to create original designs for textbooks and library books. Myers Education Press (www.myersedpress.com) publishes books and digital content for colleges of education in the United States and around the world. Our rapid growth requires us to expand our roster of freelancers as we add new books to our front list.
Qualified candidates should have a proven record as a designer and must be able to present a strong design portfolio. Experience in designing book covers is preferred. For examples of the design of our current products, use this link: https://myersedpress.presswarehouse.com/browse/catalog.
Requirements for applicants must include:
subscription to an art service, such as iStock or other permissions-free or Creative Commons-licensed database of images
ability to provide barcodes for each assignment
experience in researching appropriate artwork to match author and publisher preferences
current InDesign software (no other software can be substituted)
the ability to turn assignments around quickly and efficiently
Each assignment involves a number of steps:
1. initial assignment, including instructions for any design preferences or supplied artwork from author and/or publisher. This means creating a basic design, with 1-2 variations of that design
2. after receiving feedback from the publisher, making any revisions and providing a finished front cover in PDF format for advertising and promotion
3. at a later stage of the production process for each book, the creation of a full cover mechanical (front cover/spine/back cover) from copy and content supplied by the publisher
4. once proofread and approved, supplying a set of PDFs and the native InDesign INDD files
Note that the cover mechanicals and INDD files are the property of Myers Education Press; the designer holds no rights to the design of any project.
This is a remote freelance position, so there is no requirement to come to our office. This is an ideal position for an artist who works from a home studio.
Our rate of pay is $250.00 per assignment, which is billable to our company in two parts: $125 upon submission of the initial designs, and the balance upon delivery of the finished files, including all of the steps listed above. A substantial number of projects are currently under contract so this is a good opportunity for an artist capable of handling multiple assignments.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, link to a digital portfolio, and resume to Chris Myers, Publisher, Myers Education Press, [email protected]. No phone calls, please.
