TEACHING ARTIST

Hours: Part-time, by project, 10-15 hours/week

Supervisory Responsibility: No

Reports to: Program Director

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

Location: Portland, and travel within a 60 mile radius

At The Telling Room, we empower youth through writing and share their voices with the world. Focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, we seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for our students. We believe that the power of creative expression can change our communities and prepare our youth for future success.

We seek to add a creative and collaborative educator to our teaching artist team. This position is a good fit for someone looking to fill hours a few days a week between 8am and 2pm.

Position Overview:

- The teaching artist will be an integral part of the teaching team at The Telling Room. They will work both collaboratively and individually to lead programs for young people with a wide range of backgrounds in grades one through twelve, both in schools and at the Telling Room.

- Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

- Develop, revise, and prep curriculum relevant to programs, schools, and students; maintain high-quality programs and stay on theme

- Lead teach or co-teach at least one residency per semester resulting in a chapbook publication; coordinate with families as needed; coordinate culmination readings/events

- Lead teach Field Trips as needed

- Lead teach 2-3 summer camps per year; coordinate with families as needed; coordinate culmination readings/events

- Lead and shepherd program volunteers, interns, and contracted guest artists; provide feedback as needed to maintain high-quality programs

- Participate in ongoing teaching artist trainings and professional development for teachers

Qualifications:

- Enthusiasm for The Telling Room’s mission

- Enthusiasm for writing

- Skill in teaching writing

- Experience teaching writing

- A flexible and non-judgmental approach to people and work

- A commitment to collaboration

- Must have access to transportation and a valid driver's license to travel to programs

Benefits and Compensation:

- Telling Room Teaching Artists are paid $25.00 per hour.

- Mileage reimbursement at the federal rate
