The BIS Infrastructure department at Argonne National Laboratory has an opportunity for a junior to mid-level Network Engineer within the Enterprise Network Infrastructure group at its Lemont, IL campus. The Networking team is responsible for designing, installing, operating, and troubleshooting the high-speed network infrastructure for the laboratory. This includes local area (LAN), wide area (WAN), wireless networks, datacenter networks, and security devices that provide firewall and VPN capabilities. Due to the nature of the work, the position will require primarily an onsite presence, with some remote work flexibility, and requires occasional off-hours work to minimize interrupting normal operations.Responsibilities
Day-to-day operations of network infrastructure (Cisco, Aruba, Juniper all in use)
Perform network maintenance and system upgrades
Provide escalation support and troubleshooting to resolve network issues
Work within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval, and success of changes made to the network infrastructure
Establishes contacts with vendors for networking support and problem resolution
Documents network engineering designs, plans, maps, methods, and procedures
Position Requirements
Experience with TCP/IP Network protocols and their operations
Understanding of layer 2 networks and associated protocols
Basic programming knowledge for automation of tasks
Understanding of wireless network concepts, experience with diagnostic tools a plus
Familiarity with basic OS (Linux/Windows) commands and common tools used for management and monitoring of network communication systems
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT2 or PT3) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:
PT2 Level: Bachelor’s and 2+ years of experience or equivalent
PT3 Level: Bachelor’s and 4+ years of experience or equivalent
