Argonne invites applications for the position of Director of the Argonne Accelerator Institute (AAI). Argonne has extended expertise with cutting-edge ion and electron accelerator technologies. It operates major facilities such as the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS), the Advanced Photon Source (APS) and Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) and has played key roles in the last 50 years in complex and ambitious DOE accelerator projects. The Argonne Accelerator Institute works to utilize Argonne’s extensive accelerator resources and complementary expertise available in multiple Argonne directorates, to strategically position Argonne as a leading center for research and innovation in accelerator technologies. It aims to promote innovative research, actively oversee a portfolio of key technologies with the potential to transform our existing facilities, to shape and determine the future of accelerator development and construction, and to oversee a dynamic and acclaimed center of excellence for accelerator physics with a broad portfolio.Basic Purpose:The AAI Director will support the mission of the AAI, which centers on the following related goals:

Advance accelerator technology critical to innovation for the Basic Energy Science, High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics portfolios.

Create synergies between Argonne partners and across the National Laboratories to create new opportunities that advance the DOE mission for accelerators.

Oversee a selected, strategic, lab-wide, and acclaimed accelerator R&D portfolio. Promote collaborations with other DOE National Laboratories and oversee contributions to major accelerator projects.

Identify opportunities for next generation accelerator facilities in Northern Illinois

Actively engage with university partners to create a vibrant education platform at Argonne.

Responsibilities:This position will provide leadership and vision to guide the AAI in the following established objectives:

Coordinate R&D activities requiring the aggregation of multiple expertise at Argonne

Oversee R&D programs, including development of experimental facilities for accelerator R&D

Actively support needs for theory and simulation capabilities for accelerators and integration with lab computing ecosystem.

Develop and maintain a vibrant education and research program with a particular focus on educating the next generation of accelerator physicists and engineers and outreach to MSIs.

Deliver effective internal and external communication strategies to increase visibility of Argonne’s accelerator R&D initiatives.

Position Requirements

Knowledge of accelerator physics, engineering, and technology

Knowledge of the operations of complex, state-of-the-art accelerator facilities, with a minimum of 10+ years of experience in accelerator operations, research, development, or construction

An advanced degree in a relevant technical field is preferred
