Finishing Specialist

Job Overview:

Pio Custom Cabinetry is seeking a skilled Finishing Specialist to join our team. As a Finishing Specialist, you will be responsible for applying high-quality finishes to wood and solid surface products, ensuring that every product meets design specifications and quality standards. This role requires expertise in wood finishing, solid wood machining, and Corian/solid surface fabrication. We are looking for lean-minded individuals focused on continuous improvement, who can help us streamline production and minimize waste while maintaining exceptional craftsmanship.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Finishing Application and Quality Control

Apply various wood finishes, including stains, lacquers, paints, and sealers, using spray guns, brushes, and other finishing tools.

Prepare surfaces by sanding, filling, and priming to ensure smooth and even application.

Ensure all finished products meet design specifications and company quality standards through routine inspections.

Maintain knowledge of finishing techniques and materials to achieve high-end, custom results.

2. Machining and Fabrication

Work with solid wood, ensuring pieces are properly machined and prepared for finishing.

Utilize saws, routers, and other woodworking equipment to fabricate and refine wood components.

Assist in Corian and solid surface fabrication, including cutting, shaping, and sanding.

3. Tool Operation and Maintenance

Operate and maintain finishing equipment, including spray booths, spray guns, and sanding machines.

Keep tools and machinery in good working order by performing routine maintenance and cleaning.

Create jigs or templates when necessary to ensure consistency and efficiency in repetitive tasks.

4. Problem-Solving and Process Improvement

Identify potential defects in the finishing or machining process and correct them efficiently.

Collaborate with the production team to troubleshoot and resolve material issues.

Suggest and implement lean improvements to optimize production workflows and minimize waste.

5. Team Collaboration and Communication

Coordinate with assemblers, project managers, and other team members to maintain project timelines.

Share knowledge and techniques with team members to promote a culture of learning and improvement.

Communicate any discrepancies, delays, or issues to supervisors promptly.

6. Organization and Time Management

Organize workstations to maintain a clean and efficient environment in line with lean manufacturing principles.

Manage multiple finishing tasks and prioritize work to meet deadlines.

Maintain accurate records of finishes applied and ensure traceability of work.

7. Leadership and Mentorship (if applicable)

Provide guidance to less experienced team members in finishing techniques and equipment use.

Help onboard new employees by demonstrating best practices.

Assist in motivating the team to meet deadlines and maintain high-quality standards.

Qualifications:

Required Skills and Experience:

Proven experience in wood finishing, cabinet making, or custom millwork.

Knowledge of various finishing materials, including stains, sealers, paints, and lacquers.

Familiarity with woodworking machinery and tools, such as saws, routers, and sanders.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and project specifications.

Experience working with solid surfaces like Corian or similar materials.

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Skills:

Experience in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement initiatives.

Familiarity with creating and using jigs for efficient and accurate production.

Leadership or mentorship experience.
