Part-time Health Reporter in Ontario, Oregon
Job Title: Health Reporter
Summary: The Health Reporter covers a wide range of health care and related issues in Ontario, Oregon. Files reports for the Ontario Headlines website.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Covers the healthcare beat in Ontario, Oregon: the healthcare industry, legislation and public policy, insurance and the uninsured, public and environmental health. Primary focus on local issues and how state and national issues and policies play out in the city. Identifies trends and developing stories, and pursues enterprise investigative work in the beat to uncover stories that no one else is reporting. Researches, writes, reports, edits, and voices a wide variety of stories and series. Collaborates with news department on optimal placement of material. Contributes to Ontario Headlines website, including audio, text, extended interviews, photos, etc. Contributes to Ontario Headlines' social media platforms. Works with editor to utilize the website to find sources and potential guests for stories. Serves as a resource for the news department on healthcare issues -identifying sources, opportunities for additional coverage, etc. Participates in all assigned fund-raising and outreach activities. Other duties as assigned.
Available to work part-time during standard working hours.
Knowledge and Competencies: Knowledge of the Ontario, Oregon area. Minimum of 1 year journalism experience. Good writing and editing skills, ability to identify key developments and distill complex matters. Able to work collaboratively, meet deadlines, juggle multiple tasks. Position is based in Ontario, Oregon with minimal travel as needed for reporting and professional development.
