The Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi is Hawaiʻi’s oldest and largest non-profit public interest law firm with offices statewide. Through its dedicated staff, Legal Aid helps ensure justice and fairness for all by providing civil legal aid to the most vulnerable in our society.

Overview:

We are seeking a full-time Paralegal to provide legal services to seniors, and to conduct some outreach and education on legal issues affecting seniors. Areas of practice include, but are not limited to, legal assistance with advance/estate planning (advance health care directives, powers of attorney for financial decisions, wills), family law, housing, consumer issues, and public benefits. Duties also include some grant reporting and file management to ensure compliance with Legal Aid’s funders. Candidates should meet the following minimum job qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred, but at a minimum applicants should have an Associate degree or equivalent from a two year college or technical school or equivalent experience.

Paralegal experience preferred but not required if the applicant possesses related skills and experience, including experience in the medical or social services fields.

Experience working with seniors and/or individuals with physical and mental disabilities strongly preferred.

Demonstrable commitment to social justice or experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income populations, or issues affecting such populations, preferred.

Cultural sensitivity, familiarity with local community needs, and ability to work well with diverse, low-income populations strongly preferred.

Experience in case/client management strongly preferred.

Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), required.

Sensitivity to resource limitations required.

Must be able to perform multiple tasks with attention to detail, and work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.

Must be able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships in a small working group.

Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for occasional travel to various parts of Kaua‘i.

Compensation: $20.90 to $27.70 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
