Assistant Cook (School Cafeteria)
This is an entry-level cook assistant position in a school cafeteria setting in Kaneohe. Any interested applicant is encouraged to apply!
Schedule:
Full time 40 hour work week or if substituting hours may vary. Hours will be according to the normal business hours of operation per the center location or the needs of the food service program.
Pay rate: $16/hr. and up (depends on experience)
The Assistant Cook is primarily responsible for assisting in the preparation of food to be served complying with all applicable sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards and following established food production programs and procedures, as directed by the Cook and/or Food Service Manager.
Essential Duties:
1. Correctly assist in – preparing all food served following standard recipes and special diet orders. Following all USDA CACFP standards and procedures.
2. Apportion food for serving.
3. Support Cook/FSD to maintain daily production records.
4. Keep work area neat and clean at all times; clean and maintain equipment used in food preparation.
5. Complete food temperature checks before service.
6. Store food properly and safely, marking date, time, when to consume, and item description.
7. Assist the Cook/Food Service Director in preparing monthly menus for infants through preschool aged children.
8. Provide support in the submission of attendance records, original meal counts to the Food Service Director at the end of each month is required. In addition, provide support to maintain DOH Sanitation, USDA CACFP, and national accreditation requirements. This includes preparing for inspections from these agencies and others as required by the school.
9. Using the company approved vehicle, help the Cook/FSD shop at grocery or wholesale food stores that fall within the USDA approved list of items. Done monthly or as needed.
10. Assist in ensuring the appropriate use of facility supplies and equipment to minimize loss, waste, and fraud.
11. Report necessary equipment repair and maintenance to Food Service Director.
12. Follow school appearance guidelines and other policies and procedures.
13. Deliver meals to centers assigned using company equipment and vehicle.
14. Additional tasks may be assigned based on the needs of the organization, center, or kitchen.
Other duties:
1. Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances.
2. Prepare and serve food for special functions as assigned.
3. Attend workshops and staff meetings as required.
4. Provide support by assisting with monthly observations at the assigned schools as directed by the FSD/Cook.
5. Complete other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
Indoors, air-conditioned or naturally ventilated kitchen, serving areas, classroom dining areas, storage rooms, and offsite locations as required.
Equipment Use:
Requires knowledge and skills to use the following equipment
1. Kitchen equipment, i.e., oven, stove, dishwasher, slicer, coffee machine, mixer, steamer, and chef’s knives.
2. Computer
3. Telephone
4. Designated company vehicle for transportation of meals to designated school(s), and other food service related errands
Mental, Physical and Communication Demands:
Mental:
Must conduct work to ensure that State DHS Licensing health requirements are met.
Concentration and corrected vision are necessary in order to receive instructions from managers and to work with other staff and to operate tools and equipment.
Requires good work ethic and attendance.
Physical:
Prolonged periods of walking and standing.
Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling and lifting/pushing of up to 50 pounds or more.
Manual dexterity is necessary to execute tasks in the kitchen.
Communication:
Requires working with a diverse group of people (staff, families, children, agencies, etc.) and being capable of communicating effectively being sensitive to the needs of the individual’s culture, ethnicity, beliefs, socio-economic background, and religious belief.
Requires good verbal and written communication skills.

Education/Experience/Licensure:
High school diploma or equivalent.
