Position Summary:
The RCP Tail Man plays a critical support role in the trench during the installation of reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) for storm, sewer, and drainage systems. Working directly behind the pipe layer, the Tail Man ensures proper pipe alignment, assists with joint assembly, and helps maintain safety and efficiency in the trench. This role is physically demanding and requires awareness of safety protocols in excavation environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist the pipe layer in setting, aligning, and laying reinforced concrete pipe in the trench.
Guide the pipe into place using tools, signals, and manual labor.
Clean and lubricate pipe joints as needed for proper sealing.
Install gaskets, bands, and other pipe connections as directed.
Ensure proper alignment and grade of pipe sections during installation.
Communicate closely with the pipe layer, top man, and equipment operators for smooth workflow.
Maintain a clean and organized work area inside the trench.
Follow all safety guidelines, including trench safety and PPE requirements.
Assist with hand digging, trench prep, and backfilling when necessary.
Qualifications:
1+ year of experience in underground utility or pipe-laying work preferred.
Familiarity with RCP pipe handling and installation.
Ability to work in trenches and confined spaces.
Knowledge of construction site safety and OSHA regulations.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to lift heavy materials (50–100 lbs) and perform physically demanding tasks.
