The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act for workers who need access to secure areas of the nation’s maritime facilities and vessels.
TSA conducts a security threat assessment (background check) to determine eligibility and issues the credential.
U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, naturalized citizens, and certain nonimmigrant aliens may apply for the credential.
Most mariners licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard also require a TWIC.
The application process can be completed online or in person at an application center.
The fee for a new applicant is $125.25, and for in-person renewal, it is the same.
Online renewal costs $117.25, and a replacement card is $60.00.
To be eligible for the reduced rate, applicants must present a valid driver’s license with a hazardous materials endorsement or a Free and Secure Trade card.
The TWIC card is valid for five years.
