Production Roaster- Small Planes Coffee

Small Planes Coffee is seeking a well-qualified, enthusiastic candidate to fill the role of Production Roaster at our coffee roasting facility in Washington DC. Small Planes is a seven-year-old coffee company that is defined by three core values: the relentless pursuit of coffee quality, an authentic commitment to fair and sustainable business practices, and a friendly, accessible approach to customer service.

Job Overview

The Production Roaster's role is to follow pre-determined roast recipes on our Loring S15 Falcon roaster set by our Director of Coffee. The Small Planes roasting team will train or orient any new hire on our in-house systems and techniques. No previous roasting experience required but we are looking for a curiosity about coffee and the roasting process, a willingness to work both within a team and independently, attention to detail and reliability. The position will be for two 8 hr shifts weekly between Monday-Thursday. Our current hours of operation begin as early as 6am and end as late as 10pm and roasting shifts reflect those hours.

Job Responsibilities

Follow profiles established by Small Planes roasting department using Cropster interface

Utilize other computer programs including Google Suite

Proficiency with other equipment, including Sovda Pearl Mini, air compressor, scales, vacuum lifts

Restocking green coffee supply

Communicate with roasting team and leadership regarding issues with supplies, equipment, coffee

Assist with regular equipment cleaning and maintenance.

Light custodial tasks including taking out trash and recycling 2x/week, cleaning bathrooms and warehouse weekly

Regularly taste coffee and contribute feedback

Attend weekly staff meeting

Other responsibilities and cross-training into other departments as needed

Qualifications

Willing and able to follow instructions and perform repetitive tasks accurately and consistently.

Interest in using logical problem-solving to implement and refine production systems.

Self-motivated when working independently.

Effective team player when assisting co-workers.

Professional commitment to maintaining Small Planes’ quality and customer service standards.

Able to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout shift.

Able to lift up to 70 pounds with assistance
