Growth mindset kitchen looking for a creative leader (No Fri/Sat work)

Distrito de Columbia, Washington
Aplica ya

Char Bar, an unassuming but popular restaurant on 21st & L is looking for a leader who is strong but not overbearing, calm under pressure but not careless, and most of all is passionate and hungry to learn about all things food.

Our restaurant falls in a unique niche in the community and is running strong numbers, and we will continue to grow operations so we can have a solid base to expand upon.

In the past year, our team has taken organized, quick, and efficient measures to overhaul and improve many aspects of the restaurant, including systems, equipment, and personnel. All throughout, our sales and frequency of positive customer reviews have increased significantly, and we are not letting up on the gas. Our kitchen team is hardworking, but will benefit from organization, efficiency, and detailed attention to standards of prep and presentation. As the Chef, you will have more than ample opportunity to flex your creative muscles, receive support to learn as much as you want, and work with people who can nerd out on everything from fry technique (pH of your pre-soak? blanch? are Kennebeck's really the best?) to fermentation to what's the proper stacking order of a burger.

The team you will be leading can bust out large quantities of tasty food (we did 475 covers last night) but has some gaps in their knowledge and habits. We need someone who can lead by example most of all. This means not being above any job in the kitchen, while at the same time providing your team with all the information, guidance, and tools that they need to do their jobs right. This requires the skills to:

- Be organized at work and in life

- Be a good communicator

- Set high standards and understand that progress is made gradually, with consistent reinforcement

Some skills that will help you get a solid footing:

- Basic math (for scaling recipes, food & labor cost %'s)

- Cursory familiarity with Kosher food rules (we'll teach you everything you don't already but need to know)

- un poco kitchen Spanish

- How to use a combi oven

- Toast POS backend + scheduling software

- Organization and cleanliness

Management at the restaurant has both a strong culinary and business background. We are assuming you (a) are equally if not more knowledgable or (b) want to learn to be. Working closely with management, you will have all the support and training that you need to acquaint yourself with any aspect of restaurant operations, and grow your career in a place with the opportunity to move up and beyond.

This role is appropriate for someone with Exec or CDC level experience, or a Sous with several years experience in that role with confident leader vibes. As such, we're listing starting pay in the $70k range (plus performance related bonuses) but can increase that figure depending on experience.

Beyond that basic pay structure, we offer paid time off accrual, weekly pay, and no work on Fridays or Saturdays (we're closed those days). No health/life insurance yet, but we are working on setting that up for our team. Lots of access to financial and personal growth opportunities - ownership is generous with their time and resources.

We'll be reviewing applicants who submit a relevant resume, and throw in a couple lines about the most memorable dining experience you've had recently (good or bad).

We look forward to hearing from you.
