Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.Medical GroupAbility to complete satisfactorily the medical examination for this job.Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 100 pounds.Ability to distinguish basic colors for safety identification.Mission Essential DesignationIn accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.Job Summary/DutiesThis is track and structure maintenance work of a difficult nature requiring considerable physical effort. An employee in this job is responsible for performing skilled labor tasks and/or assisting other personnel removing, repairing, installing, flagging, welding, grinding or fabricating various track parts and appliances. The work requires an understanding of maintenance procedures and practices, maintenance theory, the materials, parts, tools, test equipment and operating systems associated with WMATA track and structures and repair facilities.Employees are assigned elementary track and structures maintenance and repair work in subways, on aerials and on ballasted track sections. Employees are expected to gain familiarity with and acquire skills for track and structure maintenance and repair. Employees receive instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently. Work is normally reviewed and verified upon completion. Employee is supervised by assigned Supervisor or Leadman.Performs flagging, welding, grinding, fabrication, removing, repairing, installing and scheduled maintenance on assigned tracks and structures in accordance with WMATA track standards, specific layout design plans and standard AREA specification.Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled or corrective maintenance in subways, on aerials and on ballasted track sections using precision measuring equipment such as track levels and gauges to test for deviation from WMATA track standards. Operates hand drills, core drills, track drills, rail saws, chain saws, profile grinders, surface grinders, hand tampers, generators and other track machines related to track and structure work powered by gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, electric or air.Maintains hand tools and air tools by performing scheduled maintenance, lubricating, and cleaning.Sets up and works from scaffolding, ladders and other high reach or specialized equipment as required in assigned work.Completes documentation and reports for the repair and maintenance of track related components when required by using proper forms and methods; prepares requisitions for parts from supply storeroom.Attends on-the-job and formal training classes; assists individuals in higher job levels in their assignments or provides job specific training to lower job levels.Responds to and provides assistance in snow emergencies and emergencies which require repairs to track or structures involved in incidents, accidents or derailments.Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.Works variable shifts, days and hours as required and as provided for under existing Union contract.Performs all other related duties as required.Evaluation CriteriaConsideration will be given to applicants whose resumes demonstrate the required education and experience.
