POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

This position is full-time, following a first shift schedule, on-site, 40 hours per week, scheduled Monday - Friday.

The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is the agency responsible for corrections in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The agency operates 13 correctional facilities. It has its headquarters in Wethersfield. The DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, human, and provide re-entry programming.

The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction is a unified system; all sentenced and un-sentenced offenders are supervised by the DOC. The Department also provides supervision for offenders on parole, community release, and other discretionary release programs.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Correction this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks as contact person between the enterprise program and other governmental agencies to promote the purchase of various products and the utilization of the various services.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Sales Representative will have access to state car usage for travel from Central Office to visit existing and potential customers as well as attend trade shows.

A "day in the life" of the Sales Representative may include:

Meeting with Sales Manager, Shop Supervisors and Director of CEC to discuss new company products or services, recurring customer issues, upcoming sales or new leads to pursue;

Interacting with prospective or existing customers and recording new sales/quotes while developing strong business relationships;

Selling offender manufacturing products to tax supported entities to cover the cost of training and rehabilitation, which provides skills necessary to work on the outside once returning citizens are released from incarceration;

Making an impact by assisting in the funding of our offender specialized training through sales, which teaches on the job training; and

Performing related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of

the organization of state and municipal governments;

a variety of manufacturing methods and materials;

Skills

interpersonal skills;

oral and written communication skills;

in computing cost bids;

Ability to

prepare concise reports;

utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of employment in industrial sales or industrial purchasing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience networking and building relationships with customers;

Experience negotiating with customers for the purchasing of products;

Experience identifying prospective customers, and generating sales leads from new and existing customers;

Experience generating/navigating trade related documentation such as blueprints, AutoCAD and schematics;

Experience responding to bids and annually budgeting customer projects;

Experiencing contacting new and existing customers to discuss needs;

Experience negotiating prices and terms, and preparing sales agreements;

Experience collaborating with colleagues in different sectors including colleges, state entities, municipalities and nonprofit entities;

Experience maintaining a customer contact list and customer relationships;

Experience with Microsoft office tools including World to develop letters, quotes and weekly sales reports, and Excel to create spreadsheets; and

Experience using Peoplesoft to create work orders and proformas.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents are required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification at the time of appointment.

Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
