Position Highlights

This position is full time on first shift, Monday through Friday, from 7:45 AM until 3:00 PM.

Selected candidates will be required to attend a paid 14-week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, Connecticut.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the repair, monitoring and installation of plumbing, heating and steam-fitting activities.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Repair of critical systems such as:

Drinking (potable) piping distribution/pumping;

Hot water heating;

Steam distribution piping;

Drain (sanitary) piping, macerator (grinding, and pumping;

Cross connection (back flow prevention);

Cell fixtures (toilets, sinks and showers).

Supervising assigned inmates at a Correctional Institution;

Keeping record of tool/inventory control;

Protecting the health and safety of the public, staff and inmates;

Snow and ice removal to maintain safe access for the police, medical, staff and public;

Maintaining mandated compliances with Federal & State statute and agency directives and policies by assuring humane conditions of confinement in the facility through repair and maintenance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in plumbing and steam-fitting trades;

Knowledge of

building codes;

maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems;

operation of institutional steam boilers and heating systems;

Skills

interpersonal skills;

oral and written communication skills;

Ability to

plan, layout and schedule maintenance assignments;

operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems;

maintain records and prepare reports;

read blueprints and schematics;

work in confined spaces;

troubleshoot issues relating to plumbing and steam-fitting;

instruct inmates or other employees in techniques and skills of plumbing and steam-fitting;

perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations;

Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience as a plumber and/or steamfitter.NOTE: Based on an individual’s technical experience, the length of credited service will be determined at the discretion of facility management.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at a highly skilled level. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the trade may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.

Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with repair and maintenance of commercial plumbing systems and associated controls;

Valid P1 (Unlimited Plumbing Contractor) or P2 (Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber) License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.

Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.

Incumbents in this class may be required to respond to after-hour emergencies as requested by facility supervisors.

Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.

A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
