ABOUT BIKES TOGETHER

Bikes Together is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes equitable access to bikes and bike education through a variety of recycling and education programs and a social enterprise retail shop. We are a safe and inclusive space to ask questions, a resource to get or maintain a bike - no matter the budget - and a place to build skills, knowledge, and community centered around bicycles. We’ve been operating in Denver, CO since 2008.

Bikes Together is staffed by an Executive Director, 4 full-time staff, 5 part-time staff, and 6 instructors/oncalls, and a corps of volunteers. The current 8-person Board of Directors includes long-time volunteers, mechanics, and community advocates, and is majority trans/women/intersex/genderqueer (TWIG) and 25% members of color.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Bikes Together is excited to meet our next Interim Executive Director! The Interim Executive Director will be tasked with providing strong leadership, organizational and operational stability in a time of transition, requiring a highly adaptable, organized, and strategic mindset. This person will be community-focused, operationally-oriented, and moved to make bicycle transportation, recreation and mechanics accessible to people who are usually excluded because of race, class, and/or gender. The Interim Executive Director will oversee budgeting, ongoing fundraising, lead staff, strategy, and improve operations of our unique nonprofit. This individual will be supported by an active board and staff in our collective efforts to grow capacity, build sustainability, prioritize equity, and deepen our impact. TERMS OF POSITION: This is a full-time position covering a 6-month term, with the potential opportunity to become the permanent Executive Director. The position is hybrid, requiring some on-site support to the physical bike shop and annex, along with telework opportunities. The candidate must currently live in the Denver Metro area or be willing to relocate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision & Staff Management

-Strengthen the staffing and operational framework during the interim leadership transition.

-Provide leadership and supervision to all managers and direct reports through clear and decisive communication, delegation, goal setting and evaluation, and commitment to personal and professional development.

-Oversee or direct the recruitment, onboarding, retention, and release of staff.

-Promote an inclusive, equitable, and trauma-informed approach to conflict resolution.

Board Relations & Strategic Leadership

-Keep the Board of Directors fully informed during regular board meetings and check-ins on the operational condition and financial health of the organization and all important influencing factors.

-Build and maintain a healthy, transparent, and positive relationship with the Board of Directors.

-Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors and staff to develop, disseminate, and carry out Bikes Together’s strategic plan.

-Assist the board in evaluating leadership and organizational structure at all levels of the organization, recommend improvements, and manage needed changes.

-Partner with the Board in identifying, recruiting, and onboarding new board members to reflect the strategic needs of the organization.

Financial Management

-Create an annual budget in collaboration with the Management team for presentation and approval of the Board.

-Work closely with the Finance Committee, Management Team, and bookkeeper to monitor and ensure accurate accounting, reporting, and financial management.

-Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.

Fundraising

-Update and implement the annual development plan to meet the organization’s fundraising goals to improve financial health and sustainability.

-Manage and direct organizational fundraising activities, including grants, fundraising events and campaigns in collaboration with the -Development Committee. Co-chair the Development Committee.

Operations & Administration

-Oversee management staff to ensure efficient and effective day-to-day operations and shop coverage.

-Maintain consistent, transparent, and equitable HR processes and oversight organization-wide.

-Ensure the organization has adequate insurance and policies for current operations, asset protection, and renewal of leases.

-Mitigate and respond to incidents, as needed, to maintain a safe and effective operation.

Communications & Public Relations

-Serve as Bikes Together’s spokesperson and public representative for media inquiries and stakeholder engagement.

-Lead the development and delivery of organizational communications and ensure that Bikes Together has a public image that is visible, responsive, and mission-aligned.

-Create and oversee external communications strategy including social media, website, e-newsletters, media requests, and general mail/email/phone communications.

-Maintain and cultivate positive and collaborative relationships with community members, neighbors, landlords, strategic partners, foundation officers, and donors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Our ideal candidate will hold most of these qualifications, however, we encourage all who believe they have the skills and the drive necessary to succeed to apply for this position:

-2+ years experience as an Executive Director with strong supervisory experience

-2+ years active nonprofit fundraising experience, including success cultivating and maintaining individual donor programs, writing grants, and securing and maintaining foundation funding

-Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation and analysis

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills

-Strategic mindset with demonstrated experience implementing a strategic plan

-Excellent organizational and prioritization skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

-Nonprofit or Social Enterprise management experience

-Experience serving on, or working with, nonprofit boards

-Experience managing staff with a diverse backgrounds, skills, and life experiences

-Strong conflict resolution skills

-Ability to learn new software, such as Google Suite, Lightspeed POS system, Constant Contact marketing software, and social media (Instagram, Facebook)

-Familiarity with the current state of bike advocacy and industry

-Demonstrated understanding of anti-oppression and equity concepts, a commitment to building a multiracial, feminist, accessible organization, and a love of bicycles

PAY + BENEFITS

-Annual Salary: $75,000-$80,000

-Generous paid PTO and Holiday time

-$200 biweekly health insurance stipend for use on the Marketplace

-Discounts and purchasing through bike shop vendors at cost

-$450 annual credit towards used parts and service labor

-Well-established, positive relationships with customers, neighbors, volunteers, and community-based groups also working towards health-, transportation-, and education-equity
