POSITION TITLE: MOBILE CRISIS UNIT (MCU) CASE MANAGER

PROGRAM: MOBILE CRISIS UNIT (MCU)

POSITION SUMMARY

This SLO MCU model is made up of a two person team consisting of a City of San Luis Obispo Fire Department Emergency Medical Technician and a TMHA Mental Health Case Manager. The SLO MCU team will deal with a wide range of mental health related crises, working in the field with the SLO Fire Department (which may include conflict resolution, welfare checks, and suicide prevention strategies) as well as non-emergency medical issues (including diabetes, hypertension, and basic first aid for injuries). The SLO MCU team incorporates Mental Health First-Aid, Trauma Informed Care, Harm Reduction, Suicide Prevention, Crisis Intervention Training and Motivational Interviewing techniques when addressing each call for service. The staff of the SLO MCU team are not law enforcement officers, nor are they licensed clinicians. They do not have 5150 authority.

Under direction of the TMHA Director of Homeless Services, and in close connection with the San Luis Obispo Fire Department, the Mental Health Case Manager provides consultation and subject expertise for the team, and ensures that each team member’s observations and interactions with the clients are considered for individual treatment planning. The Mental Health Case Manager works in collaboration with other TMHA programs and community partners in order to link clients to the most needed resources available.

HOURS

Full-time. The initial schedule will be 08:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday. The ongoing work schedule will align with the SLO City Fire Department staff and is a 9/80, over a two week period. 8 nine hour workdays, 1 eight hours workday and every other Friday off.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

BA/BS AND 6 months of full-time experience with target population, OR AA/AS or CADAC/CPRP certification AND 2 years of full-time experience with target population, OR 4 years of experience (Full-Time equivalent years) with target population. Ability to handle intense situations, display good judgment and decision making skills, and remain calm and clearheaded under pressure. Must have a strong commitment to the right and ability of each person with a severe and persistent mental illness to live in a safe living environment; develop a meaningful role in the community; and have access to competent and continuous supports and services. Must have a strong commitment in clients’ rights to self-govern and create their own choices. Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative work style and strong oral/written communication skills. Able to deal effectively with a variety of people and personality types regardless of age, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or socio-economic level. Well defined organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently and flexibly. Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices while acting in such a manner as to assure at all times, maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees, clients, and other persons contacted through TMHA business. Must have reliable automobile and utilize own vehicle at work with a company mileage reimbursement when a company vehicle is not available. Conditions of employment include: Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid CA Driver’s License, reliable transportation, proof of auto insurance, and DMV driving record that meets TMHA’s current vehicle insurance requirements. May be required to utilize personal vehicle and auto insurance. Attendance is an essential function of this job that requires face-to-face interaction with clients and/or other employees. Ability to possess and maintain good physical and mental health. Comply with a T.B. assessment (possibly a TB test if needed to confirm a negative tuberculosis result) and receipt of a criminal record clearance through fingerprinting. Must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, including booster, or request a medical exemption with a healthcare provider document advising against the vaccine OR an exemption based on a strongly held religious belief or practice per the California Department of Public Health. Those who request and are approved for an exemption will be required to test for COVID-19 weekly and send the results to TMHA’s Human Resources Director every 7 days. Must be able to successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
