A 'pilot car' is used to escort over-the-road truck cargo that exceeds State/Federal legal limits for weight, width, length, or height. These vehicles are responsible for driving ahead and behind the load to look-out for traffic or other obstacles. They warn other drivers that the truck is passing by or reroute the truck to avoid obstructions. By providing warning signs and using their vehicle to direct traffic away from the path of travel, pilot car drivers help ensure that all road users remain safe throughout the oversize load transport process. Additionally, pilot drivers assist the truck driver with loading/unloading and securing the cargo to be moved, safety audits, route planning, and trip documentation.
