Modern Sailing School & Club—an award-winning sailing school and the largest in the San Francisco Bay Area—is hiring a Fleet Service Crew Chief for our Berkeley location.
With a fleet ranging from 30’ to 44’, including catamarans, Modern Sailing offers ASA certification courses, sailboat charters, corporate regattas, and international destination sails. Our Fleet Service team keeps our boats safe, reliable, and adventure-ready—and we’re looking for an experienced leader to help keep the fleet shipshape and ready for action!

Position Summary
The Fleet Service Crew Chief leads our Fleet Service Technicians to ensure our sailboats are well-maintained, customer-ready, and on the water. This is a hands-on leadership role that involves coordinating maintenance, troubleshooting technical issues, and working with customers, instructors, and boat owners to keep the fleet running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
✅ Team Leadership – Direct and coordinate the Fleet Service Team to keep all maintenance tasks on schedule.
✅ Charter Readiness – Ensure all boats are prepped, clean, and ready for charters and special activities (races, multi-day courses, offshore trips).
✅ Rapid Turnaround – Assess, clean, and prepare boats quickly between charters.
✅ Customer Support – Assist customers as needed, troubleshoot issues, and secure replacement parts or gear.
✅ Fleet Maintenance Oversight – Oversee weekly checklist tasks: fueling, topping freshwater tanks, pump-outs, and interior/exterior cleaning.
✅ Specialized Repairs – Perform and/or supervise sail, rigging, fiberglass, electrical, and plumbing repairs as needed.
Specialized Skills (Preferred)
-Troubleshooting marine mechanical and electrical systems
-Sail and rigging repairs
-Fiberglass & gelcoat repair
-Marine carpentry and plumbing
Ideal Candidate
Self-motivated, organized, and positive
Skilled in sailboat maintenance with specialty experience in one or more marine trades
Team-oriented and tech-comfortable (MS Office, Google Sheets/Forms, cloud file storage)
Sailing knowledge or interest in learning to sail
