The Sailing Science Center (SSC) is seeking a motivated and reliable individual for the part-time (20 hours per week) role of Operations Manager. The person in this role will manage the day-to-day operations of organizing and coordinating interactive science exhibitions throughout the Bay Area. The role includes working with the SSC leadership and the community to schedule events, and to recruit and schedule volunteers to staff those events.
This role is for an organized individual with a high level of accountability, Strong interpersonal skills, and who is able to work proficiently both online and in person. Candidates for this role should be comfortable with flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings. The majority of this role will be performed through remote work, with the occasional need for in-person appearances for events and special meetings. Duties and Responsibilities
Manage event logistics and volunteer attendance
Create a positive and productive volunteer working environment
Inform volunteers about upcoming events, opportunities and other organizational news
Respond to volunteer inquiries
Connect with current volunteers and engage potential volunteers through meetings, event attendance, and surveys
Represent the organization to the community as a liaison to other organizations
Build relationships with key stakeholders
Lead and support fundraising programs, events, meetings and grant requests
Document and communicate SSC activities and processes
Maintain volunteer databases, events calendar, and related expenses
Lead efforts to improve programs, exhibits, and processes of the SSC
Reporting Relationship
This position will report to the SSC Board of Directors. The holder of this role will attend Board meetings and will meet one-on-one with each board member on a quarterly, or as-needed, basis. They will maintain a log of open activities and provide a written project status update to the Board on a monthly basis.
Qualifications and Abilities
Bachelor's degree or higher preferred
At least 10 years of working experience
At least 4 years of leadership experience
A high level of computer proficiency:
Gmail, Slack, Google Workspace, Salesforce, etc.
Familiarity with sailing activities preferred
Hands-on individual contributor
Tactful team player and leader
Skilled at time management and setting priorities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Enthusiastic and charismatic
Self-motivated, organized and detail oriented
A quick learner on technology and a self-starter
Physical Requirements
Lifting and Carrying: Job may require lifting or carrying heavier objects, such as boxes of files or equipment.
Stooping and Kneeling: Job may require working in awkward positions, such as stooping or kneeling to access equipment.
Walking and Climbing Stairs: Job will require walking for short periods or occasional stair climbing.
Sitting and Standing: Job will likely require sitting for most of the workday, with occasional standing or walking for meetings, events, breaks, and other activities.
Reaching and Grasping: Job will require reaching for objects on your desk, and the ability to use a computer keyboard and mouse.
Seeing and Hearing: Job requires the ability to see clearly, to read computer screens and documents, and to hear well to participate in meetings and phone calls.
Dexterity: Job requires sufficient hand-eye coordination to type, use a computer mouse, and perform other tasks requiring fine motor skills.

The Sailing Science Center is an interactive science museum, framed around sailing. Our current mode of delivery is through mobile exhibitions from the Sailing Science Center trailer. We are dedicated to delivering fun, STEAM education, focused on the physical sciences and math, appealing to all ages, with special emphasis on middle school and high school.
