Housing Legal Case Worker

STATUS: 1.00 Full Time Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Supervising Attorney and Program Manager

SALARY: $25.00 - $26.00 per hour, depending on experience

Legal Aid of Sonoma County (LASC) seeks a legal case worker who is passionate about housing justice to support our housing team. The housing team consists of five attorneys and four legal case workers. In this position, the case worker will help the housing team with intake and administrative tasks required to provide legal representation to low-income tenants facing eviction and to address other tenant rights.

LASC has a high-volume caseload with firm deadlines; this position requires excellent organizational and time management skills.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support for Housing Team:

Answer housing hotline calls.

Triage and screen new clients for eligibility, complete intake paperwork, and create hard copy of case files as well as an electronic case file.

Conduct client interviews and draft client correspondence.

Maintain case files, including inputting up-to-date case notes, time reporting, client demographic data.

Support attorneys’ case work, including preparing and filing basic judicial council legal forms under attorney supervision, conducting research on resources or issues at direction of attorney, and providing support in Court as needed.

Maintain client and attorney meeting calendars, and tracks case deadlines and Court appearances.

Close completed cases and input and track closing data as necessary for contract compliance.

Coordinate and help facilitate tenant workshops and outreach events and track as needed for contract compliance.

General:

Provide backup support to the front desk as needed.

Occasional driving to court, outreach events, community meetings and to client appointments, is required.

Administrative and Other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

At least two (2) years’ experience in administrative work, customer service or public facing work.

A commitment to working with all persons regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, economic background, immigration status, gender identification, or sexual orientation. Compassion for and desire to help the vulnerable and underserved in our community.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a diverse team.

Must be flexible and work well under pressure.

Working knowledge of computer applications including the Microsoft Office Suite and database programs.

Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively with great attention to detail, including timely case management and capturing of data for reports to funders.

A firm commitment to on-time and accurate timesheet reporting is required.

Position requires driving, a valid CA Driver’s license and current proof of automobile insurance required.

This position is not remote, applicants must be within commute distance of the LASC office in Santa Rosa, CA.

Experience Desired, but not required:

Bilingual in Spanish

A demonstrated commitment to social justice.

Experience working with tenants or lived experience with housing instability.

Prior legal services or non-profit experience is strongly preferred.
