Litigation Secretary / Paralegal

Our small, busy insurance defense law firm seeks a Self-Starter, full time civil litigation legal secretary/paralegal with a minimum of 3 years' civil litigation experience. This is an in-office position. The position is about 85% secretarial and 15% paralegal with pleading/discovery drafting. We offer exciting cases in a statewide practice.

Qualifications:

Paralegal certificate from ABA Approved program preferred but not required.

Minimum three years of civil litigation experience, either plaintiff or defense. Personal injury practice area preferred.

Understands the discovery process, along with preparing deposition notices and witness subpoenas with minimal direction, coordinating deposition dates with multiple counsel, mediations/mediators, expert depos, scheduling court reporters, arranging for translators if needed.

Must be reliable (great attendance and ability to meet deadlines) and have exceptional analytical skills.

Strong writing and proofreading skills.

Superior organizational skills for tracking tasks and deadlines.

Must be computer-proficient, strong typing (70+wmp), proofreading, grammar skills, TOA/TOC generation with Word, and experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro and Outlook.

Experience drafting professional letters, emails, and cover letters with minimal direction.

Court website experience in retrieving and following Local Court Rules for statewide practice, retrieving tentative rulings, retrieving department Standing Orders and calendaring deadlines as needed, reserving court hearing dates.

Trial prep experience preferred. (Trial Subpoenas, coordinating and communicating with trial tech people, experts and witnesses, trial binders prep, knowing or looking up when MILs need to be filed, when are documents and/or binders due to court, etc.)

Learns new document management software quickly or has prior experience with Clio Manage.

Ability and willingness to collaborate with staff and colleagues at all levels.

A keen interest in professional development and growth. Firm pays for pre-approved MCLE.

Excellent attention to detail and superior organizational skills.

Responsibilities:

Fast-paced environment with daily deadlines.

Caseload management from file inception through trial in collaboration with assigned associates.

eFiling through OneLegal.

Preparing Table of Authorities and Table of Contents through Word.

Arrange Remote Appearances through CourtCall, LACourt Connect, VConnect, etc.

Manual calendaring.

Prepare deposition notices with minimal direction, including third-party appearance subpoena. (Document subpoena requests for medical records, etc., as well as the summarizing of them, are excluded as they are handled by other staff.)

Prepare propounding discovery shells, as well as response shells.

Prepare certain other pleadings and discovery with minimal direction, such as CMC Statements, General Denial Answers, Form Interrogatories, Requests for Production of Documents.

Frequent review of Local Court Rules, Standing Orders, etc. as needed for statewide practice.

Daily file maintenance in paperless environment.

Time tracking and management of paralegal/billable tasks.

Trial preparation.
