Our family is seeking a kind, reliable personal assistant for a 90-year-old couple living independently in their Berkeley home. This will be a new role for the family, so the list of responsibilities is still evolving. We envision 3 mornings per week to start (3 hours per day), with potential for additional hours as the role and relationship evolve. Must have own car and cell phone and live within 30 minutes of Berkeley.
Responsibilities might include:
Household Help:
-tasks such as changing light bulbs or carrying laundry up/down stairs;
-preparing lunches and other kitchen help;
Administrative and Technical Help:
-technical troubleshooting/support (phones, computers, hearing aids, or television);
-administrative support such as researching needed repair services, answering the phone, appointment coordination
-Help with decluttering, including help selling/donating items;
Personal Help:
-support with prescribed home exercises;
-companionship on walks or local excursions;
-transportation to appointments or other local destinations;
-local errands
Required Qualifications:
-Clear background check and valid driver’s license
-Owns a reliable car and cell phone
-Prompt and highly dependable
-Physical ability to lhelp an elderly person with declining mobility
- Easy to work with, patient
- Good communication skills
- Independent and resourceful
Preferred Qualifications:
-Previous experience in a similar role
-Experience providing compassionate support and companionship for aging individuals who are fiercely independent
-Sensitivity to the challenges faced by the elderly
-Demonstrated ability balancing scheduled tasks with unexpected requests or emergencies
- Graduate student or someone with a social science background interested in engaging in conversation with a retired sociology professor
