Swope Design Solutions is a San Francisco-based mechanical engineering and product design firm specializing in consumer products, medical devices, and robotics. We provide end-to-end engineering expertise, from initial concepts to high-volume production. Our in-house machine shop fosters a dynamic problem-solving environment, enabling rapid prototyping and iterative design. We are looking for an exceptional Machine Shop Manager. This is a leadership position that will require approximately 75% billable activities, consisting of hands-on machine operations and engineering design, and 25% supervisory duties. You will be responsible for running our prototyping lab which includes 3-axis and 5-axis CNC mills, a CNC lathe, manual machines, welding equipment, and much more.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Machining & Fabrication:
-Operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment.
-Utilize CAM/CNC software for part fabrication.
-Interpret engineering drawings and produce parts to specifications.
-Develop and manage inspection programs and quality documentation.
-Accountable for shop output quality.
-Engineering & Design
-Perform engineering design for Client projects.
Leadership & Team Management:
-Manage and mentor 1-3 technicians or engineers.
-Establish performance metrics, provide feedback, and promote continuous improvement.
Equipment Management & Maintenance:
-Oversee equipment and tool usage, and perform routine maintenance.
-Train team members on safe equipment operation.
Prototyping Lab Operations:
-Maintain an organized and efficient machine shop.
-Manage consumables inventory and procure new tools and equipment.
-Inspire and motivate your colleagues to keep our shop and lab spaces clean and organized.
Safety & Compliance:
-Knowledge of and ability to apply OSHA regulations to company safety policies.
-Conduct safety audits and training.
-Manage incident reporting and resolution.
Quoting & Documentation:
-Meet with potential clients to collect project requirements and assess needs.
-Generate client quotes by analyzing production processes, materials, and timelines.
QUALIFICATIONS
-Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in Advanced Manufacturing, Manufacturing Technology, Machine Tool Technology, or related field (required).
-Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in the above fields, Mechanical Engineering, similar (preferred).
-5-8 years of experience operating CNC and manual machining equipment.
-Proficiency with Solidworks CAD and Solidworks PDM.
-Proficiency with CAM software (HSMworks or Fusion HSM preferred).
-Strong understanding of machined part design, dimensioning, and tolerances.
-Experience managing and organizing prototyping labs.
-Experience leading and mentoring small teams.
-Experience with machining production projects.
-Knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018 standard).
-Self-motivated and responsible.
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS
-Experience in low-volume production and prototyping environments.
-Experience developing and training staff on MPIs and SOPs.
-Experience in ISO 9001 manufacturing environment.
DETAILS
Hours are 9:30am - 6:00pm Monday – Friday, but flexible if schedules need to shift.
