California, San francisco bay area
Aplica ya

TITLE: Instructor

LOCATION: Livermore, California

POSITION: In Person, must be located in the Bay Area

DEADLINE: July 18th or until position filled

WHO WE ARE

Construction Trades Workforce Initiative (CTWI), is the nonprofit partner of the Alameda, Contra Costa and Napa/Solano Building Trades Councils. Founded in 2018, CTWI works to advance economic and social justice for underrepresented populations interested in entering family sustaining, union construction careers by strengthening workforce programs, policies and partnerships. We bridge the gap between organized labor and key community stakeholders through coalition building, pre-apprenticeship development and high road policy initiatives, all aligned around our goal of building the next generation of diverse, local and skilled workers.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

There is a high need for new people to join the union construction trades (electricians, plumbers, fitters, etc). The process to get into these trades is very competitive and requires a candidate to pass a math, mechanical and reading exam. Currently, only 5 - 20% of the labor pool passes these rigorous exams, consisting of math, mechanical aptitude, and an interview. To address this challenge, we offer Construction Math Test Prep Course to ensure that students are adequately prepared to pass these exams and enter union trades.

This course relies on having a reliable, dedicated instructor to support student needs. The test preparation teacher will work closely with CTWI to receive professional development on math test prep for the construction trades, as well as report to CTWI regarding student updates and questions.

WHO YOU WILL BE WORKING WITH

We are a passionate team of ten people. Our backgrounds range from former educators, engineers, union leaders to community organizers. We are highly collaborative and support each other in achieving programmatic and organizational goals. We believe in unions and the important role they play in creating middle-class careers. We are committed to creating more quality jobs for underserved populations.

YOUR ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Construction Math Test Prep instructor is responsible for teaching remedial math (4th-8th grade), mechanical reasoning, spatial reasoning and test taking strategies to students with varying academic levels. You will develop relationships with students, through in-person and email follow up, to ensure students are aware of trade openings and application requirements. You will need to work collaboratively with Construction Trades Workforce Initiative staff to understand the curriculum and deliver the materials using best teaching practices to prepare students to take and pass the written and oral exams for the construction trades, and to understand the union trades and their unique entrance requirements. The instructor is responsible for tracking and reporting student engagement and outcomes to CTWI. The classroom location will be at Livermore Adult Education at 1401 Almond Ave. Livermore, CA 94550.
