Department Manager – Air Quality Monitoring/Measurements

Sonoma Technology is seeking a senior environmental professional (scientist, engineer, or manager) to join our team and manage one of our air quality monitoring/measurements departments. This department is responsible for developing, implementing, and operating regulatory air quality monitoring networks at the fencelines of industrial facilities. These networks are primarily located at facilities in California, with business expanding both domestically and internationally. The department includes project managers, operations staff, instrument specialists, air quality scientists, and field technicians. Strong collaboration is required outside of the department with data analysts, software engineers, quality assurance staff, business developers, corporate advisors, and corporate operations staff.

The successful candidate should possess strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. They will play a crucial role in driving organizational success by effectively managing resources, optimizing processes, and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation within the department. The department manager will oversee a geographically dispersed team, including direct reports working both locally and/or remotely nationwide. This position is located at our Petaluma office (North San Francisco Bay Area), but candidates in the Los Angeles area are also encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

Actively develop and implement strategies to meet departmental goals and objectives, collaborating with senior management to ensure they are aligned with the overall organizational mission and vision.

Lead the department by guiding and motivating team members to achieve departmental and organizational goals.

Proactively identify challenges, issues, and opportunities within the department, and develop effective solutions and strategies to address them. Make informed decisions based on data, analysis, and input from stakeholders.

Maintain accountability for the successful execution of high-impact projects within the department.

Governance

Manage and supervise departmental staff, including hiring, training, performance evaluation, and professional development.

Oversee day-to-day operations of the department, ensuring efficient workflow, productivity, and quality standards are met.

Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulations relevant to the department's operations.

Staff Development

Ensure that staff have clear career paths and are motivated and interested in the work they perform. Create an environment where staff are excited to come to work.

Foster a culture of open communication, collaboration, and teamwork within the department and across the company. Move towards conflict when it arises to resolve issues quickly and promote mutually beneficial outcomes.

Serve as a liaison between departmental staff and senior management, delivering timely and consistent feedback.

Technical and Business Contributions

Proactively maintain technical knowledge relevant to projects within the department. The ability to serve as a technical subject matter expert is preferred.

Ensure that clients are well-served and actively foster positive relationships with them.

Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and regulatory requirements to maintain compliance and drive for continuous improvement of department operations.

Work with team members to expand the fenceline monitoring business to other customers and in new geographies.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Previous experience working in a regulatory environment (or similar)

A proven track record of staff management and support through collaborative problem-solving efforts

A high level of accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail

The ability to convey complex technical information to a broader audience

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Comfort and familiarity with managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Excellent organizational, time management, problem solving, and interpersonal skills

A strong interest in environmental projects

Willingness to travel (approx. 20% of the time) in support of staff and project initiatives

Knowledge and skills with computer software

A BA or BS degree in physical science, engineering, or business

At least 15 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. BS + 11 years, MS + 9 years, PhD + 6 years)
