Bookstore Clerk and Social Media Manager — Feminist Bookstore & Press

Part-Time (noon to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday)| San Diego, CA | $18–22/hour (DOE)

About Us

We are a proudly feminist bookstore and a subsidiary of an independent feminist press dedicated to publishing socially engaged literature by and for marginalized voices. Our storefront is more than a retail space — it’s a cultural hub, community resource, and platform for voices often pushed to the margins. We're looking for someone who shares our passion for transformative literature and social justice to join our team.

About the Role

As our Bookstore Clerk, you'll do more than shelve books — you’ll be part bookseller, part curator, part community-builder. You’ll help customers discover books they didn’t know they needed, suggest new titles for inventory, manage day-to-day operations, and help grow our online presence. This is a great opportunity for someone who is book-obsessed, tech-savvy, and energized by working at the intersection of literature, activism, and community.

Key Responsibilities

Recommend books to customers with warmth, insight, and intentionality.

Suggest new titles and authors to the owner for inventory consideration — especially works by queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, disabled, and otherwise marginalized writers.

Use Square to check customers out, manage inventory, and input new titles.

Create visually engaging graphics and promotions using Canva.

Manage and grow our social media presence (Instagram, TikTok, etc.) with consistent posts that reflect our values and highlight our books, events, and community.

Help plan and promote in-store and virtual events (readings, signings, workshops).

Keep the store tidy, welcoming, and inclusive to all who enter.

Who You Are

A book lover with broad and deep knowledge of socially conscious literature, especially by marginalized voices.

Familiar with current feminist, anti-racist, and decolonial discourse and passionate about making radical literature accessible.

Comfortable using Square for inventory and transactions.

Proficient with Canva and familiar with trends and best practices on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

A strong communicator, able to engage authentically with both customers and the wider online community.

Well-connected or eager to connect with San Diego’s literary, activist, and arts communities.

Experience in retail, bookstores, publishing, or a related field is a plus.

Bonus Points If You

Identify as part of a marginalized community.

Are bilingual (especially Spanish-speaking).

Have experience organizing events or running community programming.

To Apply

Please send your resume, a short note about why you’re interested in this role, and any relevant social media or design samples (if applicable). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
