Janitors perform a variety of tasks to keep a building clean and well-maintained, including cleaning, maintenance, and outdoor work:
Cleaning
Dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, washing windows and mirrors, cleaning ceiling vents, and disinfecting surfaces
Maintenance
Performing routine inspections and maintenance, replacing lightbulbs, unclogging toilets, and maintaining HVAC systems
Outdoor work
Mowing lawns, watering plants, trimming bushes, removing snow and debris, and monitoring irrigation systems
Janitors may also be responsible for: Stocking and maintaining supply rooms, Notifying management of any deficiencies or repairs needed, Following health and safety regulations, Cooperating with other staff, and Ensuring the facility is locked after business hours.
Some skills that may be helpful for janitors include: Knowing how to clean restrooms, Being familiar with cleaning and repair equipment, and Having basic arithmetic and writing skills.
