The OpportunityThis position, Senior Manager, Human Factors, works out of our San Diego, CA location in the Infectious Disease business unit.We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision-making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.The Senior Manager, Human Factors, will focus on developing user-centered products for point-of-care, rapid in vitro diagnostics (IVDs). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in human factors engineering, user research, and a passion for creating intuitive and engaging products . This role will be responsible for overseeing the product development process from user research and early concepts to launch, ensuring that our products meet the highest standards of usability and user satisfaction.This role will closely collaborate with Marketing, Regulatory, Engineering, and Program Management leadership to ensure delivery of easy-to-use diagnostic product systems and a well-considered overall user experience to meet strategic business needs. The person hired in this role will have at least 6 direct reports and more that are dotted line reporting to this person throughout the product lifecycle stages.What You will Do
Lead and mentor a team of human factors engineers and user researchers with a focus on customer-centricity: understanding the user needs and designing products that customers love to use.
Formalize a Human Factors process for the team to follow. Lead the team through the change management process to aid adoption. Educate the organization on the role HF will play in new product development.
Ensure the team is conducting meaningful user research and usability testing to gather insights and inform design decisions.
Develop and implement research and testing strategies that align with company goals and business priorities.
Create and maintain best practices for Human Factors. Aid in the adoption of R&D Excellence principles and tools by the team.
Work with the global R&D team to ensure that projects are appropriately supported. Coordinate with R&D teams in Korea, China, Japan, Ireland and several locations in the US.
Collaborate with cross-functional leaders, including program management, engineering, and marketing.
Stays current with industry trends and emerging technologies.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors in Human Factors, Psychology, User Experience or similar field.
At least 10 years of overall industry experience, more than 5 years of experience in leading teams in Human Factors or User Research
Travel up to 25% US and Internationally to visit internal and external teams you help support in the product map journey.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency with industry-standard design and prototyping tools including Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
Demonstrated experience in developing and launching exceptional end-to-end user experiences.
Demonstrated experience in applying and evangelizing the human-centered design process.
Experience in medical device development and design controls process.
International product development experience.
Experience working cross-functionally with senior leadership
Experience with user research methodologies and usability testing.
Ability to think strategically and solve complex design problems.
Industry experience in Health Care and Medical Devices
Understands when to work with Regulatory/Marketing/other teams during the product phases.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Independent, organized, and meticulous.
