Role Description: Project Accountant – Construction

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Project Accountant to join our team at our Elk Grove, CA office. This is a full-time, on-site role responsible for managing all financial aspects of construction projects from pre-construction through closeout.

As the Project Accountant, you will work closely with project managers, estimators, and field teams to ensure accurate job costing, budget tracking, subcontractor compliance, and financial reporting. You will oversee billing, pay applications, lien releases, and contract management for multiple active job sites. This role is vital in maintaining cost controls and supporting project delivery across commercial and residential construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

Manage full-cycle project accounting for multiple construction projects

Track job costs and maintain detailed project budgets, including change orders and cost forecasts

Process subcontractor pay applications, lien waivers, and vendor invoices

Prepare owner billings (AIA format) and ensure timely payment tracking

Reconcile project accounts, prepare monthly WIP reports, and support financial closeouts

Collaborate with project managers on budget reviews, cost-to-complete, and variance analysis

Ensure compliance with contract terms, insurance certificates, and prevailing wage documentation

Maintain accurate records for audits, draw requests, and internal reporting

Support year-end reporting and coordination with outside accounting firms as needed

Qualifications

3+ years of accounting experience in the construction industry is required

Proficiency in Sage 100 Contractor or other construction accounting software is a must

Strong understanding of construction billing, cost tracking, and job costing

Familiarity with AIA billing formats, certified payroll, and lien release processes

Working knowledge of GAAP and financial statement preparation

Advanced Excel skills and ability to use project management tools (e.g., Procore, Buildertrend, or similar)

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

CPA license or certification is a plus but not required
