Civil Grading Foreman

Hat Creek Construction Company & Materials, Inc. is a privately owned, Non-Union, Civil Construction Company seeking a skilled Civil Grading Foreman to lead a grading team on large-scale construction projects primarily in Northeastern California. Our primary clients are Caltrans, Federal Highways and city/county agencies. The vast majority of our work is California Public Works Projects and paid at Prevailing wage rates. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and hands-on experience in managing grading operations. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing grading activities, filling out daily electronic timecards for the crew and comparing the daily actual costs to the budgeted costs for profitability, ensuring quality control, safety compliance, and the efficient use of resources while maintaining project timelines.

Key Responsibilities & Job Duties:

Grading Operations Management: Oversee and direct daily grading operations including excavation, backfilling, trenching, and site leveling for roads, utilities, and large construction projects.

Team Supervision: Supervise and lead a crew of grading laborers, operators, and subcontractors. Ensure the team is well-trained, motivated, and adheres to safety and quality standards.

Quality Control: Ensure grading work meets specifications, plans, and codes. Inspect and verify that grading is accurate and up to project requirements.

Safety Oversight: Implement and enforce safety protocols on the job site, ensuring all team members follow OSHA standards and site-specific safety rules.

Equipment Management: Oversee the use and maintenance of grading equipment such as bulldozers, graders, excavators, loaders, compaction equipment and trucks delivering materials to the jobsite. Ensure proper equipment operation and perform regular maintenance checks.

Scheduling & Resource Allocation: Coordinate with the project manager/superintendent to schedule and allocate resources efficiently, ensuring all tasks are completed on time and within budget.

Problem-Solving: Address and resolve any issues or challenges that arise on-site, including equipment breakdowns, delays, or conflicts between team members.

Blueprint & Plan Interpretation: Read, understand, and implement grading plans, blueprints, and project specifications. Ensure accurate measurements and elevations are followed during the grading process.

Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and superintendents to ensure grading aligns with the overall construction schedule and project goals.

Progress Reporting: Maintain accurate daily logs and reports, tracking progress and documenting any issues or changes. Provide regular updates to project managers/superintendents.

Material Coordination: Ensure timely delivery of materials (such as fill dirt, gravel, or aggregate) and ensure proper handling and storage of these materials on site.

Troubleshooting: Identify potential issues before they arise, proactively suggesting and implementing solutions to keep the project moving forward smoothly.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of 5 years' experience in civil grading operations, with a strong understanding of grading equipment and techniques.

Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a grading or construction role.

Strong understanding of grading principles, including earthwork, cut and fill, compaction, drainage, and site preparation.

Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, grading plans, and specifications.

Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, including bulldozers, graders, excavators, scrapers and compactors.

Familiarity with construction safety standards and OSHA regulations.

Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively manage a team.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Strong understanding of comparing daily costs to budgeted costs.

Valid driver’s license.

OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification preferred.

GPS experience

Heavy Job software experience a bonus but not required.
