ABOUT THE POSITION:

The City of Monterey Public Library currently has one (1) full-time Library Assistant II vacancy in the Readers' Services Section. This position coordinates Bookmobile Services including planning and implementing children's programs, and provides reference, readers' advisory, and circulation assistance at a busy public desk. The position drives our new Bookmobile vehicle to multiple community sites and to outreach partners and provides library services. The successful candidate possesses strong administrative skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment involving heavy customer service and must have the ability to work effectively under pressure. Spanish language fluency is desirable.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

-Perform a full range of duties associated with the circulation of library materials to the public including but not limited to: computer-based check out and check in, entry and maintenance of customer accounts, cash register transactions, and skilled customer service in the Library and/or on the Bookmobile.

-Plan, coordinate and oversee Readers Services activities and projects such as desk schedules, shelving, bookmobile and outreach services, organization and maintenance of circulating collections, and holds.

-Drive Bookmobile or other vehicles to service locations.

-Order supplies and monitors expenditures.

-Maintain procedures manuals.

-Supervise part-time Library Pages, Library Assistants, and volunteers.

-Prepare narrative and statistical reports.

-Support the relationship between the City of Monterey and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, library patrons, and City staff.

-Maintain confidentiality of patron records, work-related issues and City information.

-Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

Experience: Two (2) years of customer service and/or advanced clerical experience. Library and/or supervisory experience preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

Must possess a valid California Driver’s License upon time of appointment and be insurable with the City’s standard insurance rate, unless otherwise approved by appointing authority.
