ABOUT THE POSITION:

The City of Monterey’s vibrant waterfront features two wharves, two launch ramps, a 413-berth marina, approximately 120 moorings, and a busy commercial fishing industry. The Harbor Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of this active and unique harbor. We’re seeking a candidate with strong experience in boating and marina or port operations, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to provide professional, respectful service to a diverse public. This role also requires the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

SUMMARY: Under general supervision by the Harbormaster, carries out the operations of the Monterey Municipal Marina and Harbor; provides leadership to Harbor security and maintenance staff; responds to emergencies; administrates a variety of programs including security, city boat and marine equipment operation and maintenance; compliance and enforcement of local, state, and federal rules and regulations; fee collection; customer service.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This position differs from lower level positions in the Harbor in that it requires specialized and technical knowledge of maritime operations and performs more complex and varied tasks in support of higher level staff. Incumbents receive direction and supervision from the Harbormaster.

Typical Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

-Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

-Experience: Four (4) years of experience in information and marine management, and/or naval, or Coast Guard operations, and familiarity with small boats and marinas.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

-Must possess CPR and First Aid, and Hazardous material handling certification at time of appointment, or within one (1) year of employment.

-Coast Guard vessel operator’s license with towing endorsement desired but not required.

-A writing composition test may be required.

-Be able to pass a comprehensive background.
