I’m reaching out to seek legal assistance regarding an issue with a travel health insurance provider that has caused significant financial and emotional distress for my family.
I purchased a travel health insurance policy for my 79-year-old father, including coverage for pre-existing conditions, and paid over $2,000 for this plan. During our trip, my father experienced a medical emergency with chest pain and blood in the stool, requiring an urgent colonoscopy and a chest stress test. Unfortunately, the insurance provider denied my claim, even though the policy clearly included coverage for such emergencies.
Despite their promise to pre-authorize services and eliminate out-of-pocket expenses, they refused to pre-authorize the treatments and later rejected the claim entirely. I’ve already fought this case with an advocate and filed a grievance with the California Department of Insurance (CDI), but I’ve had no success. The provider has only offered $150, leaving us with close to $6,000 in uncovered medical bills. Additionally, because of their denial, my father was unable to access urgent care in a timely manner, which could have jeopardized his health further.
I’ve saved all correspondence with the insurance provider to back up my case. Beyond the financial loss, this ordeal has caused immense stress, wasted time, and a significant personal burden on my family. I believe I’m entitled to more than just the claim amount due to the damages caused by their negligence and bad faith practices.
