JOB DESCRIPTION

Under minimum supervision, the Optician will fabricate optical parts following established procedures utilizing one or more standard processes.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Hands-on Optical Fabrication – 75%

Performs all the following fabrication processes: cleaning, grinding sawing, beveling, and blocking

Be able to grind plano/spherical parts to tight tolerances

Be able to maintain .0001” parallelism over 26” block and flatness to ¼ wave over 8” aperture

Able to use calibrated test plate to interpret surface flatness

Maintain production process equipment using standard operating procedures

Capable of reading test plates, Mahr, micrometers and ultra-sonic gauges to produce specifications to WI’s

Complete general orientation of Sapphire Ops / Facility and SOPs for employee conduct related to EH&S. This includes the operation of the crane system

Block/Deblocking of large panels and 13” rounds

Hands on in the spindle grinding area. Includes contact plates, test plates, 22” and 26” sapphire blocked panels

Materials Handling & Safety – 5%

Follow proper material handling procedures for each material used

Follow proper safety rules and precautions, policies and procedures specific to fabrication processes, including the use of protective apparel

Tools & Solvent Use – 5%

Use hand tools such as micrometer for diameter of lens, depth gauge with bar for SAG, group gauge on fixture for wedge, drop gauge for center thickness, calipers for diameter of lens, dial comparator for curve of radii, vapor degreaser air gun

Paperwork & Recordkeeping – 5%

Complete necessary paperwork and record manually

Training & supervise – 5%

May train employees in the grinding area only

Have clarification of objectives, participation, communication and an active willingness to help your peers, techs, process engineers and supervisors to meet customer deliveries and company objectives

Help management to promote teamwork participation

Education & Experience

High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read and comprehend English language, blueprints and written instructions.

Ability to understand verbally the English language and follow directions.

To achieve this position, must demonstrate expertise in the grinding area and have basic knowledge in one other area of the fabrication processes, and possess 1+ years directly related experience or education.

Skills

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions.

Ability to use a scientific calculator and perform basic calculations.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to communicate in English and speak effectively before small groups of employees in the organization.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Ability to anticipate problems and proactively identify potential problems.

Physical Requirements

Standing- Particularly for sustained periods of time.

Walking- about on Foot to accomplish tasks in times for long distances from one site to another.

Sedentary- Fine Work with hands /tedious work/and detailed hand work.

Lifting - will be required to lift 35-50lbs

Wear safety gear for long periods of time.

Ability to read and understand different measuring instruments and hand tooling.
